Biography

Short Description

Saint Iwig, also recorded as Iwi, Ywi, or Iwig, was a seventh-century Northumbrian monk whose cult developed in later Anglo-Saxon England. Almost nothing is known of him from contemporary sources. The principal account of his life comes from the eleventh-century hagiographer Goscelin of Saint-Bertin, who mentioned Iwig in the course of writing about Saint Edith of Wilton. According to this tradition, Iwig was a monk and deacon of the island monastery of Lindisfarne and a disciple or companion of Saint Cuthbert, the celebrated bishop and hermit who died in 687. Lindisfarne at that period was a major center of Irish-influenced monasticism in the Kingdom of Northumbria, combining eremitical and communal life.

After his years at Lindisfarne, Iwig is said to have crossed the Channel to Brittany, where he lived as a hermit until his death. No details of his missionary or eremitical activity in Brittany have been preserved, nor is the place of his death identified. At an unspecified later date, a party of Breton clerics traveling in England in search of alms brought Iwig's relics with them. They came to Wilton Abbey in Wiltshire, a royal Benedictine nunnery closely associated with the West Saxon dynasty. Goscelin relates that the nuns of Wilton refused to surrender the relics, which thereafter remained at the abbey and were venerated there.

Iwig's feast was kept on 8 October. His cult remained essentially local to Wilton and does not appear to have spread widely. He is sometimes classified in later martyrologies and saint lists as a Benedictine, reflecting both the later history of Lindisfarne and the identity of Wilton Abbey, although the monastic rule observed at Lindisfarne in the seventh century was not yet the Rule of Saint Benedict in its later medieval form. No parentage, date of birth, or precise year of death is recorded in any reliable source. Claims of a death around 690 are conventional rather than documentary.

The presence of Iwig's relics at Wilton illustrates the circulation of saintly remains in the tenth and eleventh centuries and the way in which a Wessex nunnery could appropriate a Northumbrian figure in order to enrich its own sacred landscape. Wilton was already the resting place of Saint Edith, daughter of King Edgar, and of other holy women. Iwig's inclusion among them linked the abbey with the prestige of Lindisfarne and Saint Cuthbert. Beyond this localized veneration, Iwig left little trace in the historical record, and modern historians treat the details of his life with caution, regarding them as later legend attached to an otherwise obscure name.
