Biography

Short Description

Jacinta de Jesus Marto was born on 11 March 1910 in the hamlet of Aljustrel, in the parish of Fátima, in central Portugal. She was the youngest child of the farmer Manuel Pedro Marto and Olímpia de Jesus, and grew up in a large rural household that included her brother Francisco, born in 1908. Like other children of the Serra de Aire in the early twentieth century, she helped tend the family's sheep and lived a simple agricultural life. Later recollections, above all those of her cousin Lúcia dos Santos, describe her as lively, affectionate, and fond of singing and dancing, yet also sensitive and capable of strong attachments.

On 13 May 1917, while pasturing the flock at the Cova da Iria with Francisco and Lúcia, the three children reported seeing a lady brighter than the sun, who asked them to pray the rosary daily and to return on the thirteenth of the following months. Further apparitions were reported on 13 June, 13 July, 13 September, and 13 October 1917. After the children were detained by the civil administrator of Vila Nova de Ourém around mid-August, they reported another appearance on 19 August at Valinhos. The July message, as later recounted, included a vision of hell that particularly marked Jacinta. On 13 October a large crowd gathered at the Cova da Iria, and many witnesses described solar phenomena later known as the Miracle of the Sun. In 1930 the bishop of Leiria declared the Fátima apparitions worthy of belief.

Jacinta's response to the reported requests of the Lady was intense for a child of her age. According to Lúcia's memoirs, she offered small sacrifices—giving up food or water at times, wearing a penitential cord, and accepting discomfort—for the conversion of sinners and for the Pope, and she spoke often of not offending God and of consoling Our Lady. The children faced interrogation, public curiosity, and disbelief from some local officials and neighbors. As portrayed in these sources, Jacinta's spirituality centered on reparation, the rosary, and concern for souls she believed to be in danger of damnation.

During the influenza pandemic of 1918–1919 both Jacinta and Francisco fell seriously ill. Francisco died on 4 April 1919. Jacinta developed purulent pleurisy and related complications. She was treated at the hospital in Vila Nova de Ourém and later sent to Lisbon, where she stayed briefly at an orphanage under Mother Maria Godinho before admission to the Dona Estefânia Hospital. There she underwent surgery that included resection of ribs and endured severe pain. She died in Lisbon on 20 February 1920 at the age of nine. She was first buried in the cemetery of Vila Nova de Ourém; her remains were later transferred to Fátima and, in the mid-twentieth century, placed in the Basilica of Our Lady of the Rosary at the Cova da Iria, near those of Francisco.

Pope John Paul II beatified Francisco and Jacinta Marto at Fátima on 13 May 2000. Pope Francis canonized them at Fátima on 13 May 2017, during the centenary of the first apparition. They are among the youngest non-martyrs canonized by the Catholic Church. Their liturgical memorial is observed on 20 February. Devotion to Jacinta remains closely tied to the shrine of Fátima and to the themes of prayer, penance, and peace associated with the events of 1917.
