Biography

Short Description

Jacinto Castañeda was a Spanish priest of the Order of Preachers (Dominicans) who died a martyr in Vietnam in the eighteenth century. He was born in 1743 in Játiva (Xàtiva), in the Kingdom of Valencia in eastern Spain. From that regional Dominican milieu he entered the Order of Preachers. After formation and ordination he was incorporated into the Province of the Holy Rosary, the Dominican jurisdiction that from the late sixteenth century supplied missionaries to the Philippines and, from there, to China and Vietnam. That provincial structure explains how a Valencian friar came to spend his short adult life in East Asia.

He was sent first to the Philippines, where Spanish Dominicans already maintained convents, parishes, and missions. After a period of ministry there he volunteered for China. In the mid-eighteenth century the Qing state regarded Christianity with suspicion, and missionaries often worked in hiding. Castañeda’s time in China ended in arrest and expulsion. He then turned to Tonkin, in what is now northern Vietnam, where Dominicans of the same province had been present since the seventeenth century and where Vietnamese Catholics already formed a substantial, if periodically persecuted, community.

In Tonkin he shared the underground life of the mission: celebrating Mass in secret, administering the sacraments, and supporting both Spanish and native clergy. In 1773 he was captured. Accounts of the Vietnamese missions of that era describe imprisonment, interrogation, and demands that Christians trample the cross or deny the faith. Castañeda refused. On 7 November 1773 he was put to death by beheading, together with Vicente Lê Quang Liêm, a Vietnamese Dominican priest. Castañeda was still in his late twenties.

These deaths belong to a longer history of persecution of Catholics in Vietnam that stretched from the seventeenth century into the nineteenth, under various Trịnh, Nguyễn, and later imperial policies that treated the foreign religion as politically subversive. European missionaries and Vietnamese faithful alike were later grouped for veneration. Castañeda’s own process moved with other Dominican and Vietnamese causes of the eighteenth century. Finer personal detail beyond his origin, religious profession, missionary itinerary, and the circumstances of his execution is relatively sparse, as is typical for many missionary martyrs whose lives were recorded primarily in the context of their passion.

He was beatified by Pope Pius X in 1906 and canonized by Pope John Paul II on 19 June 1988 among the 117 Martyrs of Vietnam. Their collective feast is kept on 24 November. Individual patronages attached solely to Castañeda are not prominently recorded; he is honored as one of that company of martyrs and as a figure of Dominican missionary history linking Spain, the Philippines, China, and Vietnam.
