Biography

Short Description

Jacob Baradaeus, known in Syriac as Yaʿqub Burdʿoyo, was a sixth-century bishop of Edessa whose itinerant ordinations rebuilt a Miaphysite clergy in Syria and Mesopotamia after imperial enforcement of the Council of Chalcedon had left those communities nearly without bishops and priests. He was born at Tela, also called Constantina, a city east of Edessa in the Byzantine province of Osroene. His father, Theophilus Bar-Manu, served as a priest. Jacob was educated at the monastery of Phesilta near Tela, where he studied the Scriptures and the Greek and Syriac theological tradition and was professed as a monk. In the later 520s he went to Constantinople and lived among the anti-Chalcedonian monks whom Empress Theodora protected in the capital.

The Council of Chalcedon in 451 had split the churches of the eastern provinces. Under Emperor Justinian I the imperial church required acceptance of Chalcedon, and Miaphysite bishops were deposed, imprisoned, or driven into exile. By the early 540s the non-Chalcedonian faithful in Syria, Mesopotamia, and the territories of the Ghassanid Arabs lacked a functioning hierarchy. At the petition of the Ghassanid phylarch al-Harith ibn Jabalah, and with the support of Theodora, the exiled patriarch Theodosius I of Alexandria consecrated Jacob as bishop of Edessa in 542 or 543, together with Theodore as bishop for the Arab tribes. Jacob thereafter remained bishop of Edessa in title but almost never resided in the city.

Instead he traveled without rest through Syria, Mesopotamia, Asia Minor, Cyprus, and Egypt, wearing patched and ragged clothing in order to escape imperial agents. From this disguise came the name Baradaeus, meaning the ragged or the man in rags. His principal work was ordination. He consecrated bishops for vacant and newly organized sees, among them Sergius of Tella, whom he made Miaphysite patriarch of Antioch, thereby restoring a separate patriarchal line that continues in the Syriac Orthodox Church. Later Syriac writers credit him with consecrating two dozen or more bishops and with ordaining many thousands of priests and deacons. The largest of these figures belong to hagiographic tradition rather than to contemporary documentation, yet it is certain that he reconstituted a working clergy almost single-handedly. After Theodora's death in 548 his position became more precarious, but local populations and Ghassanid protection allowed him to continue.

In his last years Jacob was occupied with disputes inside the Miaphysite communion, especially those connected with Paul the Black, patriarch of Antioch. He set out for Egypt in an attempt to settle these conflicts and died on 30 July 578 at the monastery of Cassianus on the Egyptian frontier. His remains were later translated to the monastery of Phesilta, where he had first taken the monastic habit. The principal contemporary witness to his life is the Ecclesiastical History of John of Ephesus, who knew him; later Syriac biographies expand the outline with legendary material.

The church whose hierarchy Jacob reorganized is the Syriac Orthodox Church, long known in many sources as Jacobite after him, a name the church has often regarded as an outsider's label rather than its own. He is venerated as a saint in the Oriental Orthodox churches, and his feast is observed on 30 July. Through the bishops and patriarchs he consecrated, the separate Miaphysite succession in Syria survived sixth-century imperial pressure and became the lasting structure of Syriac Orthodoxy.
