Biography

Short Description

Jacques-Désiré Laval was born in 1803 in Croth, a village in the Eure department of Normandy, France, into a farming family of comfortable means. He received an education that enabled him to study medicine in Paris and, after qualifying as a physician, returned to Normandy and practiced for several years, including in the area of Saint-André and Ivry-la-Bataille. In the mid-1830s he underwent a religious conversion that led him to abandon medicine and seek ordination. He was ordained a priest in 1838 for the Diocese of Évreux and served as parish priest of Pinterville before discerning a vocation to the foreign missions.

Around 1841 he joined the Congregation of the Holy Spirit (the Spiritans, also known as the Holy Ghost Fathers) and was sent to Mauritius in the Indian Ocean, arriving that year. The island, then a British colony, had abolished slavery in 1835, and large numbers of formerly enslaved people of African and Malagasy origin lived in poverty with little pastoral care. Laval devoted himself to this population and to other marginalized groups, including Indian indentured laborers then arriving in growing numbers. He learned Mauritian Creole in order to preach, catechize, and hear confessions in the language of ordinary people, and he lived in marked personal poverty.

Drawing on his earlier training as a doctor, he combined priestly ministry with medical care of the sick and the poor. He organized catechetical instruction, encouraged lay participation, and established confraternities that helped sustain Christian life in villages and among laborers. Contemporary and later accounts describe him as austere, approachable, and persistent in visiting a dispersed Catholic population. He came to be known as the Apostle of Mauritius. He remained on the island for the rest of his life and died in Port Louis in 1864. Reports of his funeral describe a very large crowd, a sign of the regard in which he was held across social and racial lines.

Devotion to Laval continued after his death. His tomb at the church of Sainte-Croix in Port Louis became a place of pilgrimage. The cause for his beatification advanced in the twentieth century, and Pope John Paul II beatified him in 1979. His liturgical feast is kept on 9 September. He has not been canonized. He remains a central figure in the Catholic memory of Mauritius and, in Spiritan tradition, an example of missionary work among the poor.
