Biography

Short Description

Jacques Fesch was born in 1930 at Saint-Germain-en-Laye, in the western suburbs of Paris, into a wealthy family of Belgian banking descent. His father, Georges Fesch, was an unbeliever who provided material comfort but little moral or religious guidance; his mother was a Catholic, and Jacques was baptized in infancy, yet the household was largely secular. He proved a difficult and undisciplined pupil, was dismissed from successive schools, and completed compulsory military service in Germany. Returning to civilian life in the years after the Second World War, he lived as a young man of leisure in the affluent milieu of postwar France, without a settled profession and with little interest in religion.

In 1951 he married Pierrette, and the couple had a daughter, Véronique. He also fathered a son outside the marriage. Domestic life did not satisfy his restlessness. He conceived a plan to buy a sailing vessel and leave France for the South Pacific. Short of money, he resolved to commit an armed robbery. On 24 February 1954 he entered a currency-exchange office on the rue Vivienne in Paris, armed with a pistol. When police officer Jean Vergne attempted to arrest him, Fesch shot and killed the officer. After a brief flight through the streets he was captured. The murder of a policeman in daylight provoked public outrage in France.

Tried before the cour d'assises, Fesch was found guilty of murder and sentenced to death. Appeals and a petition for presidential clemency failed; President René Coty declined to commute the sentence. Confined at La Santé Prison in Paris, Fesch at first remained proud, irreligious, and unrepentant. Gradually, through conversations with the prison chaplain, letters from relatives, and contact with a Benedictine monk, he underwent a sudden and profound conversion to the Catholic faith, which he later described as a night of intense spiritual experience. He thereafter devoted himself to prayer, the rosary, reading of the Gospels and of spiritual authors, and an examination of conscience that his surviving letters record in unsparing detail.

In the months before his execution he wrote extensively to his family, his wife, and spiritual correspondents. These letters, published after his death under titles such as Lumière sur l'échafaud (Light over the Scaffold), reveal a man who accepted his punishment, expressed sorrow for the officer he had killed, and spoke of a desire to offer his death in union with Christ. He received the sacraments and was guillotined in the prison courtyard on 1 October 1957, at the age of twenty-seven. Witnesses reported that he went to death with composure.

After his death the letters circulated among Catholics interested in conversion and in the spirituality of prisoners. Popular devotion grew, especially in France. In 1987 Cardinal Jean-Marie Lustiger, Archbishop of Paris, opened a diocesan process for beatification, conferring on Fesch the title Servant of God. The cause has remained controversial because of the gravity of his crime and because some regard the devotion as a commentary on capital punishment. He has not been beatified or canonized. His story is often presented as an instance of late and radical repentance rather than as that of a conventional saint.
