Biography

Short Description

Jacques Sevin was born on 7 December 1882 in Lille, in the industrial north of France, into a Catholic family during the French Third Republic, a period marked by sharp conflict between the Church and secularizing governments. He was educated by the Jesuits and entered the Society of Jesus as a young man. Because of the anticlerical legislation of the early twentieth century, which dissolved or expelled many religious congregations in France, his Jesuit formation belonged to a generation that often studied and lived in exile or under legal constraint. He was ordained a priest and assigned to educational work in Jesuit colleges, where he developed a lasting concern for the moral, civic, and spiritual formation of adolescent boys.

In the years immediately before the First World War, Sevin encountered the Scout Movement founded in Britain by Robert Baden-Powell. He studied its methods, including through contact with English scouting, and became convinced that its pedagogy of character, outdoor life, personal responsibility, and service could be adapted to Catholic youth work. After the war he emerged as one of the principal architects of Catholic scouting in France. In 1920 he helped found the Scouts de France, working with churchmen such as Canon Antoine-Louis Cornette and with lay collaborators. He presented scouting not as a mere pastime but as a complete education of the person, to be joined to prayer, sacramental life, and a revived ideal of Christian knighthood. His writings on the subject, notably his book on scouting, became reference points for Catholic scout leaders in France and in other countries that looked to the French model.

Sevin’s vision was spiritually demanding and, within the movement, sometimes controversial. He insisted on a strong religious content, on the scout law as a path of Christian holiness, and on close ties between scouting and the Church. Differences over organization, the role of clergy, and educational method led to tensions with the national leadership of the Scouts de France, and he was distanced from that leadership in the following decades. He remained a Jesuit and continued to reflect on how consecrated life and the scout vocation might enrich one another. During the 1940s he gathered disciples who wished to live a more explicitly religious form of that spirit. In 1944 he founded the Sisters of the Holy Cross of Jerusalem (Sœurs de la Sainte-Croix de Jérusalem), a congregation devoted to prayer, Eucharistic life, and the Christian education of youth, together with related groups sharing a spirituality centered on the Cross and on Jerusalem as a figure of the Church.

Sevin spent his later years accompanying this foundation, which established itself at Boran-sur-Oise in the Oise department north of Paris. He died there on 19 July 1951. A reputation for holiness persisted among Catholic scouts and among members of the Holy Cross of Jerusalem. A cause for beatification was introduced in the Catholic Church; in 2012 the Holy See recognized the heroic character of his virtues and he received the title of Venerable. He has not been beatified or canonized, and the Church has not assigned him an official feast day or list of patronages. His historical importance lies in the implantation of scouting within French Catholicism and in an attempt to join modern youth pedagogy with Jesuit and contemplative sources of spiritual life.
