Biography

Short Description

Jadwiga of Poland, also known as Hedwig, was a member of the Capetian House of Anjou and the youngest daughter of King Louis I of Hungary and Poland and Elizabeth of Bosnia. She was born in Buda, in the Kingdom of Hungary, in 1373 or 1374; the precise year is not securely established. After Louis died in 1382, her elder sister Mary succeeded in Hungary, but the Polish nobility refused a continued personal union under Mary and instead called Jadwiga to rule Poland. Still a child, she was crowned in Kraków on 16 October 1384 with the masculine title of king (rex), in keeping with Polish legal custom that did not provide for a queen regnant in her own right. She had earlier been promised to William of Habsburg, Duke of Austria, a childhood arrangement that later collided with Polish dynastic policy.

Polish magnates, seeking a powerful ally and the conversion of still-pagan Lithuania, pressed her to marry Jogaila, Grand Duke of Lithuania. Negotiations associated with the Union of Krewo in 1385 led Jogaila to accept baptism, to promise the Christianization of Lithuania, and to enter a dynastic union with Poland. Jadwiga’s prior bond with William was set aside amid controversy; later chroniclers related, with uncertain reliability, that the young queen tried to leave Wawel Castle to join him. She married Jogaila, who took the baptismal name Władysław, in 1386. The marriage founded the Jagiellonian dynasty and the long Polish–Lithuanian union. Though young, Jadwiga took part in government and diplomacy, helping to mediate among her husband, his cousin Vytautas of Lithuania, and the Teutonic Knights, and supporting the missionary work that accompanied Lithuania’s official reception of Latin Christianity.

Contemporaries described her as educated and multilingual, and as notable for piety and charity. She endowed hospitals and churches, aided religious houses, and applied her personal wealth to public and ecclesiastical purposes. A lasting cultural act was her restoration and expansion of the University of Kraków, originally founded in the fourteenth century: she obtained papal approval for a faculty of theology and bequeathed jewels and other property to fund the school, later known as the Jagiellonian University. Her court became a center of religious and intellectual life in late fourteenth-century Poland.

In 1399 she gave birth to a daughter, Elizabeth Bonifacia. The infant died within weeks, and Jadwiga died in Kraków on 17 July 1399, almost certainly from complications of childbirth. She was buried in Wawel Cathedral. Popular veneration began soon afterward and continued in Poland for centuries, tied to reports of miracles at her tomb. The Catholic Church formally recognized her sanctity when Pope John Paul II canonized her in Kraków on 8 June 1997. Her feast is kept on 17 July. She is honored as a patron of Poland and of queens, and has been associated with the Christian unity of Europe.
