Biography

Short Description

Jaime Hilario Barbal was born Manuel Barbal Cosán on 2 January 1898 in Enviny, a small mountain village in the Pallars Sobirà of Catalonia, Spain, to a devout farming family. Drawn early to religious life and to the work of Christian schooling, he entered the formation of the Brothers of the Christian Schools (the De La Salle Brothers). He took the religious name Jaime Hilario, professed vows in the institute, and was assigned to teaching, in keeping with the Lasallian mission of educating the young, especially in modest and rural settings in Catalonia.

As a brother he taught in several Lasallian schools. Over the years he developed a progressive hearing loss that eventually made ordinary classroom teaching almost impossible. He did not leave the congregation. Instead he accepted more hidden work within the community, including gardening and other domestic tasks, and remained a professed religious. Later accounts of his life treat this perseverance under disability as part of his witness, not merely as a biographical accident.

The Spanish Civil War, which began in 1936, brought a severe anti-clerical persecution in Republican-held areas. Religious houses were closed, churches attacked, and large numbers of priests and religious were imprisoned or killed. Brother Jaime Hilario was arrested because he was a religious. He was held in Tarragona, subjected to a summary proceeding, and condemned to death. On 18 January 1937 he was executed by firing squad in Tarragona. Contemporary and later reports describe him as facing death calmly and professing the Christian faith, and as encouraging fellow prisoners.

Pope John Paul II beatified him on 29 April 1990 and canonized him on 21 November 1999, recognizing him as a martyr killed in hatred of the faith during the twentieth-century persecution of the Church in Spain. He is commemorated on 18 January. Veneration is strongest among the De La Salle Brothers and in Catalonia, where he is remembered as a teacher, a religious who accepted physical limitation without abandoning his vocation, and one of the Civil War martyrs of the Lasallian family.
