Biography

Short Description

Giacomo Benefatti (also known in English as James Benfatti or James Benefatti, and sometimes called James of Mantua) was an Italian priest of the Order of Preachers and bishop of Mantua in the early fourteenth century. He was born in Mantua, in Lombardy, into the Benefatti family, which later tradition describes as noble. No reliable source preserves a verified year of birth, and it should not be inferred from the date of his episcopal appointment. He entered the Dominican Order, whose members combined study, preaching, and a vowed religious life, and he remained a professed friar after he became a bishop, as was customary for Dominican prelates of the period.

In the first years of the fourteenth century he was named Bishop of Mantua. The appointment is associated with Pope Benedict XI (r. 1303–1304), himself a Dominican, and Benefatti’s episcopate is generally dated from 1303 or 1304 until his death. He held an ordinary diocesan see, not the papacy and not a patriarchal or catholicosal office. For nearly three decades he governed a northern Italian diocese in a period of communal politics, famine, and recurrent hardship. Later accounts, which are hagiographical in tone and must be used with caution, consistently present him as a pastor who gave personal attention to the poor and the sick and who directed episcopal resources toward almsgiving and the relief of want.

Those same traditions credit him with care for the material fabric of the local church and with visiting the afflicted in times of scarcity. Independent archival detail for individual building campaigns or miracles is thin; what can be said with more confidence is that his reputation in Mantua rested on charity and pastoral presence rather than on high curial office or theological authorship. He died in Mantua on 19 November 1332. Local devotion followed his death. Pope Pius IX confirmed his existing cultus on 22 September 1859, which in the practice of that era constitutes his beatification. He is commemorated on 19 November. He was not subsequently raised to the altar by a formal canonization in the modern sense, and no comprehensive list of official patronages is securely documented.
