Biography

Short Description

James of the Marches (Italian: Giacomo della Marca), born Domenico Gangala, was a Franciscan friar of the Observance, a celebrated itinerant preacher, and a papal missionary of the fifteenth century. He was born in 1391 at Monteprandone in the March of Ancona, in central Italy, to a family of modest means. An uncle who was a priest directed his early education. He later studied law at Perugia and for a period worked as a jurist. In 1416 he entered the Order of Friars Minor at Santa Maria degli Angeli in Assisi and took the name James. He joined the Observant reform then gathering force within the order and received his theological and homiletic formation in the circle of Bernardine of Siena, whose collaborator he remained.

After ordination he became one of the most widely traveled popular preachers of his age. With Bernardine of Siena and John of Capistrano he formed part of the leading Observant apostolate that sought moral reform, devotion to the Holy Name, and the suppression of factional violence in Italian cities. Successive popes employed him as nuncio, inquisitor, and preacher of crusade. In the 1430s he was sent to Bosnia to confront the Bosnian Church and groups accused of dualist heresy. He later preached in Hungary, Bohemia, and Poland in connection with the Hussite question. In Italy he proceeded against the Fraticelli, on whom he wrote a dialogue. After the Ottoman capture of Constantinople in 1453 he was among those charged with preaching the crusade in the Italian states. He consistently refused the bishoprics offered to him.

James also left a body of written work, including sermons and the Dialogus contra Fraticellos, and he took a prominent part in the controversy of the 1460s over the Precious Blood of Christ, in which Franciscan and Dominican theologians disputed whether the blood shed during the Passion remained united to the divinity of the Word; Pope Pius II imposed silence on the dispute. He promoted the montes pietatis, charitable lending institutions intended to spare the poor from usury, and he founded or reformed Observant houses. Contemporary and later accounts emphasize his personal austerity. He spent his final years in the Kingdom of Naples and died there on 28 November 1476. He was buried in the Franciscan church of Santa Maria la Nova in Naples.

A cult developed soon after his death, especially among Observant Franciscans and in the Marche. Pope Urban VIII beatified him in 1624, and Pope Benedict XIII canonized him on 10 December 1726. His feast day is 28 November. He is the patron saint of Monteprandone. In iconography he commonly appears as a Franciscan holding a chalice, sometimes with a serpent, a motif linked to a legend that a poisoned cup was miraculously exposed or rendered harmless.
