Biography

Short Description

James, son of Alphaeus, appears in the New Testament as one of the Twelve Apostles of Jesus. He is named in the apostolic lists of the Synoptic Gospels (Matthew 10:3, Mark 3:18, and Luke 6:15) and again among those gathered in the upper room after the Ascension (Acts 1:13). The Gospels give no further narrative about his calling, words, or deeds. He is commonly distinguished from James the son of Zebedee (James the Greater) by the patronymic son of Alphaeus. In Western tradition he has often been identified with the James called the Less or the Younger (Mark 15:40; Matthew 27:56), an identification that remains conventional in Catholic liturgy even though it is not demonstrated by the New Testament itself. The meaning of the epithet the Less is uncertain: it may indicate lesser stature, younger age, or simply lesser prominence compared with James the son of Zebedee.

The historical identity of James son of Alphaeus is complicated by the several men named James in the New Testament. Some ancient and medieval writers equated him with James the brother of the Lord (James the Just), the leader of the Jerusalem church whose death is described by Josephus and by Hegesippus as preserved in Eusebius. Others identified Alphaeus with Clopas (Cleophas), making this James the son of Mary of Clopas, who stood near the cross. A further suggestion, based on Mark 2:14, is that he was a brother of Levi (Matthew), also called son of Alphaeus; the evangelists, however, never state that relationship. Contemporary scholarship generally treats James son of Alphaeus as a distinct apostle about whom almost nothing else can be known from first-century sources. No reliable evidence records his place or date of birth.

Later Christian tradition supplied missionary careers and martyrdoms that cannot be confirmed historically and that often blend this apostle with James the Just. One tradition, reflected in a text attributed to Hippolytus, holds that he preached in Jerusalem and was stoned to death there by Jewish opponents, and that he was buried beside the Temple. Another tradition places his preaching in Egypt and his death by crucifixion at Ostrakine in Lower Egypt. Still other medieval accounts send him to Persia or other regions. Because these stories conflict and frequently confuse distinct persons named James, neither a city nor a year of death can be established for James son of Alphaeus as a separate historical figure. He was not Bishop of Rome, nor did he hold the later office of patriarch of an autocephalous see, though James the Just—if a different man—was remembered as the first bishop of Jerusalem.

In the worship of the churches he is venerated as an apostle and saint by ancient tradition rather than by a later process of formal canonization or beatification. The Roman Catholic Church keeps the feast of Saints Philip and James on 3 May (formerly 1 May, a date still observed in much of the Anglican Communion). The Eastern Orthodox Church commemorates James, son of Alphaeus, on 9 October. Later Catholic devotion has associated him with various patronages, including Uruguay, pharmacists, hatmakers, fullers, and the dying, though such attributions are medieval or modern and are not uniformly documented in early sources. Beyond the apostolic lists and these later traditions, the life of James son of Alphaeus remains largely unknown.
