Biography

Short Description

James the Just, also called James the brother of the Lord, was a first-century Jewish Christian leader in Jerusalem and a relative of Jesus of Nazareth. The New Testament names him among the brothers of Jesus, together with Joses (Joseph), Judas (Jude), and Simon (Mark 6:3; Matthew 13:55), and Paul of Tarsus refers to him as "James the Lord's brother" (Galatians 1:19). Ancient and later Christian writers disagreed about the precise kinship. One tradition, associated with Helvidius, took the brothers as children of Mary and Joseph born after Jesus. Eastern Christian tradition, following writers such as Epiphanius of Salamis, generally regarded them as sons of Joseph by an earlier marriage. Western Catholic tradition, following Jerome, commonly treated them as cousins and often identified James with James son of Alphaeus. Modern historical scholarship usually distinguishes James the Just from James son of Zebedee (James the Greater) and treats the identification with James son of Alphaeus as uncertain. No reliable source records a year or place of birth; he belonged to the same Galilean Jewish milieu as Jesus in the early first century.

The Gospels do not present James as a disciple during Jesus's public ministry; the Gospel of John states that Jesus's brothers did not believe in him (John 7:5). Paul lists a resurrection appearance to James among the early appearances of the risen Christ (1 Corinthians 15:7). Thereafter James emerged as the principal authority in the Jerusalem church. Paul describes him as one of the "pillars" alongside Cephas (Peter) and John (Galatians 2:9) and recounts consulting him on visits to Jerusalem. The Acts of the Apostles depicts James as presiding at the Council of Jerusalem, where he supported the admission of Gentile converts without requiring circumcision while urging abstinence from food sacrificed to idols, blood, meat from strangled animals, and unchastity (Acts 15). The New Testament Epistle of James is traditionally ascribed to him; many modern scholars date the letter later or regard the attribution as uncertain, though it reflects a Jewish Christian moral teaching consistent with his reputation. Relations with Paul were not without tension: Paul reports that men "from James" influenced table fellowship at Antioch (Galatians 2:12), and later sources remember James as a strict observer of the Jewish law.

Second-century tradition, preserved by Hegesippus and quoted by Eusebius of Caesarea in the fourth century, portrays James as an ascetic of exceptional holiness, called "the Just" (or "Oblias," explained as a bulwark of the people). According to this account he was holy from his mother's womb, drank no wine or strong drink, ate no animal flesh, did not cut his hair, and spent long hours in prayer in the Temple until his knees grew calloused. He is said to have been held in high esteem by many Jews in Jerusalem as well as by Christians. Josephus, writing in the later first century, records that in 62, after the death of the procurator Festus and before the arrival of Albinus, the high priest Ananus son of Ananus convened a Sanhedrin, accused James and others of breaking the law, and had them stoned. Hegesippus offers a more dramatic narrative in which James was placed on the pinnacle of the Temple, thrown down when he confessed Jesus as the Son of Man, stoned, and finally killed with a fuller's club; he was said to have been buried on the spot beside the Temple, where a monument was later pointed out. The Josephan notice is the principal non-Christian attestation both of James's death and of Jesus's historical existence.

Later ecclesiastical writers, including Clement of Alexandria and Eusebius, present James as the first bishop of Jerusalem, appointed by the apostles. His see became the mother church of Jewish Christianity, and later the Patriarchate of Jerusalem traced its succession to him, though the patriarchal title itself belongs to a later age. He is commemorated in Eastern churches on 23 October as the Brother of the Lord; a eucharistic liturgy known as the Liturgy of Saint James is associated with his name. Western calendars have often merged his memory with that of James son of Alphaeus (3 May). No contemporary source records a spouse or children. Veneration of James as a martyr and apostolic figure is ancient and predates formal processes of canonization.
