Biography

Short Description

James Zhao Quanxin (Chinese: Zhao Quanxin; baptismal name James, rendered in some older European sources as Giacomo) was a Chinese Catholic layman martyred in 1900 and subsequently honored as one of the one hundred and twenty Martyr Saints of China. These men, women, and children—eighty-seven of them Chinese and thirty-three foreign missionaries—died for the Catholic faith in China between 1648 and 1930. They were canonized together by Pope John Paul II on 1 October 2000. Zhao Quanxin belongs to the large cohort of native Chinese lay faithful who perished during the Boxer Rebellion, the anti-foreign and anti-Christian uprising that swept northern China in 1900.

By the late nineteenth century the Catholic Church had taken root in numerous villages of Zhili province (present-day Hebei). Successive waves of missionary work, beginning with the Jesuits in the seventeenth century and continuing through the nineteenth century under the protection—and the political complications—of the unequal treaties, had produced compact rural Catholic communities. Chinese Christians in these villages maintained sacramental life, catechesis, and often a distinct communal identity, which at times provoked resentment among non-Christian neighbors and local officials. Surviving notices of Zhao Quanxin’s life are brief. They indicate that he was born in 1856 in the village of Liushuitao in Ningjin County, in the southern part of Hebei, and that he lived as a member of the local Catholic community. No detailed account of his family, occupation, or personal piety has been widely published in Western languages; the historical record that reached Rome was concerned primarily with the circumstances of his death.

In the spring and summer of 1900 the Yihetuan (Boxer) movement, which combined spirit-possession rituals, martial practice, and a program of expelling foreigners and eradicating Christianity, gained strength across the North China plain. After the Qing court issued edicts that were interpreted as authorizing the killing of Christians, armed bands attacked mission stations and Catholic villages. In Hebei, as in Shanxi, thousands of Chinese Catholics were put to death, often after being offered the chance to recant. According to the documentation assembled for the beatification process, James Zhao Quanxin was captured in or near his native village and was killed on 20 July 1900 when he refused to apostatize. His death thus forms part of the larger wave of martyrdoms that occurred in southern Hebei in mid-to-late July 1900.

The Holy See examined the cases of numerous victims of 1900 in the decades that followed. Zhao Quanxin was beatified by Pope Pius XII on 24 November 1946. On 1 October 2000 Pope John Paul II canonized him together with the rest of the one hundred and twenty, presenting their combined witness as a fruit of the Church in China across three and a half centuries. The date of the canonization, which coincided with the National Day of the People’s Republic of China, occasioned diplomatic protest from Beijing, which viewed some of the martyrs as associated with the era of Western imperialism. The Catholic Church nevertheless maintains their cult. The liturgical feast of the Martyr Saints of China is kept on 9 July, the date of the well-documented massacre of Franciscan missionaries and Chinese seminarians at Taiyuan in 1900. For many of the Chinese lay martyrs, including James Zhao Quanxin, published biographical information remains limited, and the principal fact recorded of them is their steadfastness in faith at the moment of death.
