Biography

Short Description

James Zhou Wenmo (Chinese: 周文謨; Korean: 주문모), also known in Western sources as James Chou Wen-mo or Jacques Zhou, was a Chinese Catholic priest of the Qing period who became the first ordained priest to enter Korea and minister to its newly formed Catholic community. He was born in 1752 in China; surviving accounts do not establish a securely documented birth city or family background. He received priestly formation in Beijing under Bishop Alexandre de Gouvea of the Diocese of Beijing. Korean Catholics, whose community had begun in the 1780s after Yi Seung-hun’s baptism in Beijing and the circulation of Christian books among Confucian scholars, repeatedly petitioned Beijing for a priest. In the winter of 1794 Gouvea sent Zhou Wenmo. Disguised, he crossed the Yalu River and reached the capital, then called Hanyang (modern Seoul), in early 1795.

For about six years he lived in hiding, moving among the households of Korean Catholic families, many of them yangban. He celebrated Mass, heard confessions, baptized, regularized marriages, and gave systematic instruction, turning a largely lay-initiated movement into a sacramental church. Under King Jeongjo the climate was relatively restrained, yet Confucian officials continued to regard Catholicism as a heterodox challenge to ancestral rites and royal order. Zhou Wenmo also had to address pastoral questions, including the contentious issue of ancestral ceremonies, which would later fuel persecution.

After Jeongjo’s death in 1800, Grand Queen Dowager Jeongsun, acting as regent, launched the Sinyu persecution of 1801. Large numbers of Catholics were arrested, tortured, and killed. Zhou Wenmo went into hiding, but when he learned that believers were being pressed to reveal his location he presented himself to the authorities in the spring of 1801, hoping to spare further suffering. He refused to apostatize. On 31 May 1801 he was beheaded at the Saenamteo execution ground beside the Han River in Seoul. He was forty-nine. His death, together with those of many Korean lay Catholics that year, forms one of the earliest major martyrdoms of the Korean Church.

Although Chinese rather than Korean, Zhou Wenmo has long been remembered in Korean Catholic tradition as a founding pastor and martyr. His cause was joined to those of other early Korean martyrs. On 16 August 2014, during an apostolic visit to South Korea, Pope Francis beatified Paul Yun Ji-chung and 123 companions, a group that includes Zhou Wenmo as its only Chinese member. He has not been canonized. Martyrologies commonly keep his memory on 31 May, the date of his execution. His short ministry established a sacramental presence that later French priests of the Paris Foreign Missions Society would inherit when they entered Korea in the 1830s, and his martyrdom remains a central episode in the early history of Catholicism in East Asia.
