Biography

Jan Wojciech Balicki was born on 25 January 1869 in Staromieście, a village near Rzeszów in Galicia, then part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. He grew up in a devout Catholic family of modest means and completed his secondary studies in Rzeszów before entering the diocesan seminary in Przemyśl. He was ordained a priest in 1892. Soon afterward he was sent to Rome, where he studied theology at the Pontifical Gregorian University and received a doctorate.

Returning to his diocese, Balicki joined the faculty of the Major Seminary in Przemyśl. For decades he taught pastoral theology, dogmatic theology, and related subjects, and he later served as vice-rector and rector of the seminary. He was regarded as a demanding yet fatherly formator of future priests, insisting on both solid learning and a life of prayer and pastoral charity. He declined to seek higher ecclesiastical office and remained a seminary professor and simple priest.

Apart from his academic work, Balicki became widely known as a confessor and spiritual director. He spent long hours in the confessional, visited the sick in hospitals, and assisted the poor and prisoners. Contemporaries described him as humble, patient, and constantly available to anyone in need of the sacraments or counsel. He exercised this ministry through the First World War, the interwar Second Polish Republic, the German occupation of Poland, and the early years of communist rule.

In later life his health failed, but he continued priestly work until shortly before his death in Przemyśl on 15 March 1948. Devotion to him spread after his death. Following the canonical investigation of his life and virtues, Pope John Paul II beatified him on 18 August 2002 in Kraków during an apostolic visit to Poland. Blessed Jan Balicki is remembered as a model of diocesan priesthood marked by teaching, sacramental ministry, and care for the marginalized.
