Biography

Short Description

Jan Bula was a Czech Roman Catholic diocesan priest who became one of the best-known clerical victims of Stalinist justice in Czechoslovakia. He was born on 24 June 1920 in Lukov, a village in the Třebíč area of southwestern Moravia, then in the First Czechoslovak Republic. He grew up in a Catholic rural milieu and received his secondary education at the gymnasium in Moravské Budějovice before entering the diocesan seminary in Brno. Ordained to the priesthood in 1945, shortly after the end of the Second World War, he belonged to the first cohort of priests formed in the brief interval between the Nazi occupation and the Communist seizure of power. He was a priest of the Diocese of Brno, not a member of a religious order, and lived under the Latin-rite discipline of clerical celibacy.

His pastoral assignments were in Moravian country parishes of that diocese. By the turn of the 1950s he was serving in the area of Rokytnice nad Rokytnou, not far from the village of Babice. After the Communist coup of February 1948 the new regime moved systematically against the Catholic Church: religious orders were suppressed, bishops interned or placed under house arrest, and parish clergy subjected to police surveillance. Young priests who continued catechesis, youth work, or contact with the wider Church were particular targets of the State Security (StB) apparatus. Bula’s ministry unfolded entirely inside that climate of mounting repression.

The turning point in his life was the Babice affair of 1951. In July of that year an armed group attacked a session of the local national committee in Babice and killed three Communist functionaries. The authorities immediately presented the incident as the product of a wide conspiracy of village priests, rural opponents of collectivization, and foreign agents. Jan Bula and the Babice parish priest Václav Drbola were among those arrested and accused of inspiring or organizing the attack. Subsequent historical research has treated the proceedings as a staged political trial, in which forced confessions, agent provocateurs, and predetermined verdicts were used to terrorize the Catholic population of the Czech-Moravian Highlands and to justify harsher anti-Church measures. The killings themselves took place; the alleged priest-led conspiracy that the court constructed around them did not rest on credible evidence.

Bula was sentenced to death and hanged on 20 May 1952 in Jihlava prison. He was thirty-one years old. His execution formed part of a cluster of capital sentences arising from the Babice trials. After the Velvet Revolution of 1989 the Czechoslovak courts rehabilitated him, recognizing the verdict as a judicial murder. Within the Catholic Church in the Czech lands he is honored as a martyr of the Communist persecution. The Diocese of Brno has opened a beatification process for Bula together with Václav Drbola, but he has not been beatified or canonized by Rome and has no universally assigned feast day or official patronages. He is commemorated locally among the Czech priest-martyrs of the twentieth century, as an example of the collision between the Stalinist state and the Catholic Church in rural Moravia.
