Biography

Short Description

Jan Franciszek Czartoryski was born in 1897 in the village of Pełkinie in Galicia, then a crown land of Austria-Hungary and now in southeastern Poland. He belonged to the princely House of Czartoryski, a magnate family of long standing in the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth that remained prominent in Polish Catholic and cultural life under the partitions. His father was Prince Witold Czartoryski and his mother was Jadwiga, born Countess Dzieduszycka. Raised in a Catholic and patriotic household, he received the education usual for his rank and later studied engineering at the Polytechnic in Lwów (Lviv). After completing those studies he worked as an engineer.

In 1927, already in his thirties, he entered the Polish province of the Order of Preachers, taking the religious name Michał. He completed the novitiate and theological formation and was ordained a priest in 1931. He then served in Dominican houses in Poland, including Kraków and Warsaw, in the ordinary ministries of a friar-priest: the liturgy, preaching, confessions, and pastoral care. His late vocation and earlier technical training distinguished his path, but he lived within the regular life of the Polish Dominican province in the interwar years.

During the German occupation of Poland he remained in Warsaw. When the Warsaw Uprising began in August 1944 he acted as chaplain to Home Army fighters and civilians in the Powiśle district beside the Vistula, celebrating the sacraments and staying with the wounded in makeshift hospitals. After German forces recaptured Powiśle in early September he was seized with other prisoners. On 6 September 1944 he was shot. Later accounts used in his cause state that he would not abandon the injured who had been under his care.

Pope John Paul II beatified him in Warsaw on 13 June 1999 as one of the 108 Martyrs of World War II, Polish clergy, religious, and laity killed during the occupation. That group is commemorated on 12 June. He has not been canonized. He is remembered in the Dominican Order and in Polish Catholic memory as a member of a princely house who became a mendicant friar and who died as a pastor during the destruction of Warsaw.
