Biography

Short Description

Jan Pietraszko was a Polish Roman Catholic priest and bishop of the twentieth century, remembered above all as a pastor, preacher, and auxiliary bishop of Kraków. He was born on 7 August 1911 in Buczkowice, a village in the Żywiec foothills then belonging to Austria-Hungary and inhabited by a Polish Catholic population. He grew up in a rural family and received a classical secondary education before entering the metropolitan seminary in Kraków. On 5 April 1936 he was ordained to the priesthood by Archbishop Adam Stefan Sapieha in Wawel Cathedral. From the beginning of his ministry he belonged to the diocesan (secular) clergy of Kraków rather than to a religious order, and he remained a diocesan priest and bishop for the rest of his life.

In the late 1930s and during the German occupation of Poland in the Second World War he served in parish assignments and in the difficult pastoral conditions of occupied Kraków. After the war he became closely identified with the Church of St. Anne, the historic academic church of the city, where for many years he worked as a chaplain and preacher among students and intellectuals. Under the postwar Communist regime the Catholic Church in Kraków remained a central institution of religious and national life, and Pietraszko’s ministry unfolded in that setting. He acquired a reputation for plain, searching homilies, for availability as a confessor and spiritual director, and for a personal simplicity that contrasted with ecclesiastical formality. His writings and preached texts circulated among Polish Catholics and later helped to shape the memory of him as a teacher of the interior life.

On 23 November 1962 Pope John XXIII appointed him titular bishop of Tigillava and auxiliary bishop of Kraków. He received episcopal consecration in 1963 and thereafter assisted the ordinary of the archdiocese. His episcopal years coincided with the later sessions of the Second Vatican Council and with the long collaboration, in Kraków, between the local church and Karol Wojtyła, who served as auxiliary, apostolic administrator, and then metropolitan archbishop before his election as Pope John Paul II in 1978. Pietraszko remained auxiliary bishop of Kraków until his death and was regarded as a close co-worker of Wojtyła in pastoral government, without himself holding the metropolitan see or any Roman curial office. He was not a patriarch, nor Bishop of Rome.

Bishop Pietraszko died in Kraków on 2 March 1988. He had never married and, as a Latin-rite priest and bishop bound to celibacy, had no children. In 1994 the Archdiocese of Kraków opened a cause for his beatification, and he is honored in the Catholic Church with the title Servant of God. He has not been beatified or canonized, and he has no universally assigned feast day or official patronages. His historical importance lies in local episcopal service, in the spiritual care of Kraków’s academic community in the mid-twentieth century, and in the memory of a bishop whose authority was pastoral rather than political or curial.
