Biography

Jan Świerc was a Polish Roman Catholic priest and professed member of the Order of Friars Minor who died at the Auschwitz concentration camp during the Second World War. He was born on 26 April 1877 in the village of Królówka in Galicia, then part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire and now in southern Poland. As a young man in the 1890s he entered the Franciscan order, made religious profession, and was ordained to the priesthood in 1901. His early ministry was that of a friar-preacher and confessor in the houses of the Polish Franciscan province.

In the first decades of the twentieth century he was given positions of leadership. He served as guardian (superior) of Franciscan communities, including houses at Wieliczka and Lwów, and later at the principal convent in Kraków. He also acted as rector of the Franciscan seminary, forming candidates for priesthood and religious life. After Poland’s restoration of independence in 1918 he continued this work through the interwar years, remaining attached to the Kraków Franciscans.

Following the German invasion of Poland in 1939, occupying authorities targeted Catholic clergy and religious. In 1940 the Gestapo arrested Świerc together with other friars from the Kraków monastery. After imprisonment in Kraków he was deported to Auschwitz. There, like many other Polish priests, he was subjected to forced labor, starvation, and systematic brutality. He died in the camp on 27 June 1941.

Pope John Paul II beatified him on 13 June 1999 in Warsaw as one of the 108 Martyrs of World War II, Polish bishops, priests, religious, and laypeople killed in odium fidei under Nazi occupation. The group is commemorated collectively on 12 June. Świerc is remembered within the Franciscan order and the Polish Church as a priest who remained faithful under persecution; outside those circles he remains a relatively little-known figure.
