Biography

János Brenner was born on 17 December 1931 in Szombathely, in western Hungary, the youngest of three sons in a devout Roman Catholic family. His two brothers also became priests. He grew up through the 1930s and the Second World War in a household that oriented him toward the Church, and as a young man he was drawn to the Cistercian monastic tradition centered at Zirc Abbey, the principal Cistercian house in Hungary.

His entry into the Cistercian Order coincided with the Communist takeover and the destruction of legal religious life in Hungary. In 1950 the regime suppressed the religious orders, seized monasteries, and dispersed communities, including the monks of Zirc. Brenner nevertheless continued priestly formation under surveillance and restriction. He was ordained to the priesthood on 19 June 1955 and was assigned as a chaplain to the parish of Rábakethely, near Szentgotthárd in Vas County, close to the Austrian border.

In that post he became known for pastoral energy, especially among young people, at a time when the state sought to separate Hungarian youth from the Church. His influence made him an object of suspicion to the Communist authorities, who treated committed young priests as a political threat. On the night of 14-15 December 1957 he was summoned from the parish house on the pretext of an urgent sick call, to bring the last sacraments to a dying person in or near the village of Zsida. He set out on foot carrying the Blessed Sacrament. The summons was a trap. He was ambushed in a wooded stretch of the road and stabbed repeatedly; later accounts of the crime report thirty-two knife wounds. His body was found the following morning. He died on 15 December 1957, two days before his twenty-sixth birthday. The killing was understood, then and afterward, as an assassination meant to intimidate clergy and the faithful.

After the end of Communist rule the Church investigated his death as a possible martyrdom. Pope Francis recognized that Brenner had been killed in odium fidei, and he was beatified on 8 September 2018 at a large open-air ceremony in Szombathely, with Cardinal Angelo Amato presiding as papal legate. Blessed János Brenner is commemorated on 15 December. Because he died while carrying the Eucharist, Hungarian Catholics have often compared him to the early Roman martyr Tarcisius. His tomb in the parish church of Rábakethely has become a place of pilgrimage.
