Biography
János Scheffler was a Hungarian Roman Catholic bishop of the Latin rite who led the Diocese of Satu Mare and died in communist imprisonment in mid-twentieth-century Romania. He was born on 29 October 1887 in the village of Kálmánd (today Cămin in Satu Mare County, Romania), then in Szatmár County in the Kingdom of Hungary within Austria-Hungary. He came from a Catholic family of Hungarian ethnicity in a region of mixed Hungarian, Romanian, and German population. After ecclesiastical studies he was ordained a priest in 1910 for the Diocese of Satu Mare. In the following decades he served in pastoral work, seminary teaching, and diocesan administration, remaining with the Hungarian-speaking Catholic community after the Treaty of Trianon transferred the area to Romania.
In 1942 Pope Pius XII appointed him Bishop of Satu Mare (Szatmár). He took up the see during the Second World War, when control of northern Transylvania and the Partium shifted between Hungary and Romania, and he had to hold together a diocese marked by refugees, poverty, and political pressure. After 1944–1945 the region was again under Romanian rule as a communist government tightened its grip on public life. Scheffler sought to defend Catholic schools, charitable institutions, and the freedom of the Church. He also resisted the regime’s campaign against the Romanian Greek Catholic Church and would not lend his authority to the forced suppression of that church or to state control of Catholic life.
The communist authorities had him arrested in 1950. He was interrogated and held in several prisons, including the prison at Jilava near Bucharest. Weakened by harsh conditions and ill-treatment, he died there on 6 December 1952. Catholic tradition regards his death as martyrdom suffered for fidelity to the Holy See and refusal to collaborate with an atheistic state. He was first buried in connection with the prison; his remains were later transferred to the Roman Catholic cathedral in Satu Mare, where they are associated with his cult.
After the end of communist rule a cause for beatification was introduced. Pope Benedict XVI recognized Scheffler as a martyr, and he was beatified on 3 July 2011 in Satu Mare, with Cardinal Angelo Amato presiding in the pope’s name. Blessed János Scheffler is commemorated on 6 December. He is remembered as a diocesan bishop, not a member of a religious order, who stayed with his flock through war and dictatorship and who died in custody rather than yield the independence of the Catholic Church.
