Biography

Short Description

Saint Januarius, known in Italian as San Gennaro, was bishop of Benevento in Campania and is venerated as a martyr by the Catholic Church and the Eastern Orthodox Church. Almost nothing about his life can be established from contemporary evidence. The earliest secure traces of his cult belong to the fifth century, including a marble calendar from Naples that already records his feast, and later liturgical and hagiographical texts. Medieval passiones, whose historical value is uncertain, place his death in the Great Persecution associated with the emperor Diocletian, conventionally in 305, at Puteoli (modern Pozzuoli) on the Bay of Naples. He is the principal patron of Naples, where devotion to him has remained exceptionally intense for many centuries.

According to the later legendary accounts, Januarius was born into a prominent family of Benevento and became bishop of that city. During the persecution he is said to have gone to the Pozzuoli area to visit and encourage imprisoned Christians, among them the deacon Sossius (Sosius) of Misenum. He was himself arrested, together with his deacon Festus and lector Desiderius. After various legendary trials—including exposure to wild beasts in the amphitheatre at Pozzuoli, which the animals allegedly refused to attack—Januarius and his companions were beheaded. Other names attached to the same cycle of martyrdoms include Proculus, Eutyches, and Acutius. These narratives were compiled centuries after the events they purport to describe and cannot be treated as reliable biography, but they determined the shape of his cult throughout the Middle Ages and remain the traditional story of his passion.

The relics of Januarius were at first associated with the neighbourhood of his death and were later translated to Naples. They were kept in the catacombs on the Capodimonte hill that still bear his name and, from the later Middle Ages, in the cathedral of Naples. There the skull is preserved in a silver reliquary bust, while two ampoules said to contain his blood are kept in the Chapel of the Treasury of San Gennaro. The bones and the blood have been the focus of civic as well as ecclesiastical veneration; Neapolitan authorities and confraternities have long been involved in the custody of the relics and in the public rites surrounding them.

Three times a year—on the Saturday before the first Sunday of May, on 19 September (his principal feast), and on 16 December—the dried contents of the ampoules are publicly exposed. On many of these occasions the substance is reported to liquefy, a phenomenon recorded from at least the late fourteenth century and still central to Neapolitan religious life. The liquefaction has been treated popularly as an omen for the city’s fortunes, especially in connection with plague, war, and the eruptions of nearby Mount Vesuvius. Whatever the physical explanation of the event, the ritual has bound the saint’s memory to the identity of Naples more closely than almost any other local cult in Europe.

Januarius is invoked as patron of Naples and of Benevento, as a protector against volcanic eruptions, and, in modern times, as a patron of blood banks and blood donors. His feast on 19 September stands in the General Roman Calendar and is also observed in Byzantine calendars. He was never the object of a formal papal canonization of the later medieval or modern type; his cult is of the ancient, pre-congregation kind, already established in late antiquity and subsequently confirmed by continuous liturgical use. Devotion spread beyond Campania, but it has always been most characteristic of Naples, where cathedral, treasury, and city together continue to honour him as their principal heavenly advocate.
