Biography

Short Description

Jean-Baptiste Duverneuil was a French Catholic priest of the Order of Discalced Carmelites and one of the martyrs of the prison hulks of Rochefort during the French Revolution. He was born in 1737 in Limoges, in the historic province of Limousin in west-central France. He entered the Discalced Carmelites and received the religious name Léonard. After his formation he was ordained to the priesthood and lived as a Carmelite friar in the later eighteenth century. Surviving notices of his life are sparse: he is known chiefly through his later imprisonment and death rather than through a detailed record of his early ministry, studies, or particular houses of the order in which he served.

When the Civil Constitution of the Clergy was imposed in 1790, it required bishops and priests to swear an oath that many Catholics regarded as subordinating the Church to the revolutionary state and as breaking communion with Rome. Duverneuil, like a large number of clergy who remained attached to the Holy See, refused the oath and was therefore treated as a refractory or non-juring priest. As the Revolution radicalized, non-juring clergy were subject to arrest, imprisonment, and deportation. In 1794 he was among the priests and religious gathered for deportation to French Guiana and confined on prison ships—known as pontons—anchored in the estuary of the Charente near Rochefort on the Atlantic coast.

The principal vessels, including the Deux-Associés and the Washington, were overcrowded former transport ships. Prisoners were packed below decks with little air, insufficient food, contaminated water, and almost no medical care. Typhus and other diseases spread rapidly, and many died before the ships could sail. Jean-Baptiste Duverneuil died on 1 July 1794 as a result of the conditions of his captivity. He was one of scores who perished in the roadstead of Rochefort. The dead from the pontons were commonly buried in unmarked graves on nearby Île Madame or consigned to the sea; a specific burial place for Duverneuil himself is not securely recorded.

On 1 October 1995 Pope John Paul II beatified sixty-four of those who had died on the Rochefort prison hulks, including Jean-Baptiste Duverneuil, recognizing them as martyrs who had given their lives for fidelity to the Catholic Church and their refusal of the Civil Constitution of the Clergy. They are venerated collectively as the Blessed Martyrs of Rochefort (Martyrs of the Pontons of Rochefort). Duverneuil has not been canonized. His individual biography remains limited; what can be stated with confidence is his identity as a Discalced Carmelite priest from Limoges, his refusal of the constitutional oath, his deportation to the Rochefort hulks, and his death there in 1794 among the group later beatified.
