Biography

Short Description

Jean-Baptiste Fouque was born on 12 June 1851 in Marseille, in southern France, and remained closely bound to that Mediterranean port city for the whole of his life. He received his ecclesiastical formation in the seminaries of the Archdiocese of Marseille and was ordained a priest on 10 June 1876. In the first years of his ministry he served as a curate in urban parishes, where he came into daily contact with the poverty, overcrowding, disease, and family breakdown that accompanied Marseille’s rapid growth as a commercial and industrial center in the later nineteenth century. Those encounters determined the direction of his priesthood: he would devote himself to practical charity as an expression of the Gospel.

From the 1880s Fouque organized a network of works for people whom existing institutions often neglected. He founded or directed homes for the elderly poor, shelters and educational works for abandoned and orphaned children, and assistance for unmarried mothers, seeking to preserve both the lives of infants and the dignity of women who might otherwise have been driven to abandonment or abortion. He gathered lay collaborators and religious sisters to staff these houses and insisted that material aid be accompanied by spiritual care. His reputation as a priest of the poor spread throughout Marseille, and he was already compared in his lifetime to Saint Vincent de Paul.

The most ambitious of his foundations was Hôpital Saint-Joseph, a large hospital intended especially for patients who could not pay for private treatment. Fouque acquired land, raised funds, oversaw construction, and organized medical and nursing staff so that the hospital might serve the city’s working population. The institution became one of Marseille’s principal hospitals and the most visible lasting fruit of his apostolate. Throughout these labors he remained a diocesan priest, never entering a religious order, and worked in obedience to the archbishops of Marseille while exercising wide personal initiative in social works.

He continued his activity during the First World War, when his houses and the hospital received wounded soldiers as well as civilians impoverished by the conflict. Fouque died in Marseille on 5 December 1926. His funeral drew large crowds, a sign of the veneration in which the people of the city already held him. Popular devotion persisted in the following decades and eventually supported the opening of a canonical process for beatification.

The diocesan inquiry into his life and virtues was followed by the Roman phase of the cause. On 15 January 2015 Pope Francis authorized the decree recognizing Fouque’s heroic virtues, thereby declaring him Venerable. After the approval of a miracle attributed to his intercession, he was beatified on 30 September 2018 in Marseille. The Holy See assigned his liturgical memorial to 5 December, the day of his death. He is venerated as Blessed Jean-Baptiste Fouque, a model of the diocesan priest engaged in the service of the poor and the sick.
