Biography

Short Description

Jean-Charles Cornay was born on 27 February 1809 in Loudun, in the department of Vienne in western France. Drawn to the priesthood and to missionary work, he pursued ecclesiastical studies and entered the seminary of the Paris Foreign Missions Society (Société des Missions Étrangères de Paris) in 1830. He was ordained a priest in 1831. Shortly afterward he was assigned to the mission of Tonkin in northern Vietnam, then under the Nguyễn dynasty, and arrived in the region in 1832.

In Tonkin, Cornay served among Vietnamese Catholic communities at a time when Emperor Minh Mạng was enforcing severe edicts against Christianity. Missionaries of the Paris Foreign Missions Society worked under conditions of secrecy and danger, as the imperial court associated the Catholic faith with foreign political influence. Cornay learned the local language and ministered to the faithful, moving between villages and going into hiding when necessary to avoid arrest.

In 1837 the persecution intensified. Cornay was denounced, captured, and taken to the fortress town of Sơn Tây. There he was interrogated and subjected to torture in an effort to force him to apostatize and to betray other Christians and foreign priests. He remained steadfast. Condemned to death, he was executed on 20 September 1837. Contemporary reports from the Paris Foreign Missions Society and later Catholic hagiography state that he was put to death by being sawn in two, a brutal method recorded in some of the Tonkinese martyrdoms of that period. He was twenty-eight years old.

Cornay was beatified by Pope Leo XIII on 27 May 1900 together with other martyrs of Tonkin. On 19 June 1988 Pope John Paul II canonized him as one of the 117 Martyrs of Vietnam, also known as Andrew Dũng-Lạc and Companions. In the Roman Catholic liturgical calendar he is commemorated on 20 September, the anniversary of his death, and also on 24 November, the collective feast of the Vietnamese Martyrs. He is venerated especially by the Paris Foreign Missions Society and by the Catholic Church in Vietnam as a witness to the faith during the nineteenth-century persecutions.
