Biography

Short Description

Jean-Claude Colin was born on 7 August 1790 in the village of Saint-Bonnet-le-Troncy in the Beaujolais region of east-central France, in the opening phase of the French Revolution. Left an orphan in childhood after the deaths of his mother and then his father, he was raised in a priest-uncle’s household and formed in a period when public Catholic life in France had been severely disrupted. He pursued clerical studies in the Lyon region and was ordained a priest on 22 July 1816. The following day, 23 July 1816, he joined a group of newly ordained and soon-to-be ordained companions who made a pledge at the shrine of Notre-Dame de Fourvière in Lyon to establish a religious family dedicated to Mary, later known as the Society of Mary.

In the years after ordination Colin served in parish ministry, notably at Cerdon in the Bugey with his brother Pierre, while quietly developing constitutions and a spiritual identity for the projected congregation. The broader Marist project of the early nineteenth century also involved other founders in related branches, including Marcellin Champagnat among the teaching brothers and Jeanne-Marie Chavoin among the sisters; Colin emerged as the principal architect of the priestly Society of Mary after early leadership associated with Jean-Claude Courveille receded. He stressed a spirituality of Nazareth—hiddenness, humility, and availability in the manner attributed to Mary—rather than public prominence.

Papal approval of the Society of Mary came in 1836 under Pope Gregory XVI, who at the same time entrusted the new congregation with the Vicariate Apostolic of Western Oceania. Colin was elected the first superior general. Under his government Marist priests and brothers departed for the Pacific, working in New Zealand and across island groups of Polynesia and Melanesia; among them was Pierre Chanel, killed on Futuna in 1841 and later canonized. Colin’s administration combined missionary expansion with the difficult work of giving the young institute stable rules, houses of formation, and a distinctive community spirit in Restoration and July-Monarchy France.

Colin resigned as superior general in 1854 and spent his remaining years chiefly at La Neylière, a house in the hills of the Lyonnais that he intended as a place of prayer, writing, and Marist renewal. There he continued to revise constitutions and to counsel members of the society until his death on 15 November 1875. The Society of Mary became an international missionary and pastoral congregation. In the twenty-first century the Catholic Church recognized his heroic virtues; Pope Francis authorized the relevant decree in 2017, and Colin is titled Venerable. He has not been beatified or canonized.
