Biography

Short Description

Jean-Gabriel Perboyre was born on 6 January 1802 at Le Puech in the commune of Montgesty, in the Lot department of southwestern France, to Pierre Perboyre and Marie Rigal, members of a devout rural family. Of their eight children, several entered religious life, and two of Jean-Gabriel's brothers became priests of the Congregation of the Mission. He received his early schooling locally and, following his elder brother Louis, entered the Vincentian seminary at Montauban in his mid-teens. He joined the Congregation of the Mission (the Vincentians, also known as Lazarists) and was ordained a priest in Paris in 1826. For nearly a decade he remained in France as a seminary professor and formator, teaching theology and directing seminarians at Saint-Flour and later in Paris. Contemporaries described him as austere, devoted to the Eucharist, and increasingly drawn to missionary work.

The death of his brother Louis, who perished at sea in 1831 while traveling to the China mission, strengthened Perboyre's determination to volunteer for the same field. After receiving permission from his superiors, he left France in 1835, sailing from Le Havre. He reached Macao after a voyage of several months, studied Chinese, and in 1836 went into the interior, working first in Henan and then in Hubei. Like other Catholic missionaries of the period, he adopted Chinese dress and customs in order to live among the people and to minister to scattered Catholic communities that had survived earlier waves of persecution. He served under constant risk, since Qing law continued to treat Christianity as a forbidden religion.

In 1839 a renewed campaign against Christians led to his arrest. Betrayed to the authorities, he was seized in September of that year and subjected to repeated interrogations and tortures over the following months. He was moved between prisons, forced to wear the cangue, beaten, and pressed to renounce his faith. Witnesses later testified to his patience and his refusal to apostatize. On 11 September 1840, at Wuchang in Hubei, he was executed by strangulation while tied to a wooden cross or gibbet, in the manner used for condemned criminals. He was thirty-eight years old.

Accounts of his imprisonment and death circulated among Catholics in China and in Europe, and veneration developed within the Congregation of the Mission. Pope Leo XIII beatified him on 10 November 1889. Pope John Paul II canonized him in Rome on 2 June 1996. His feast is kept on 11 September. Relics associated with the martyr were later brought to France and are venerated at the motherhouse of the Congregation of the Mission in Paris. He is remembered as a missionary martyr of the nineteenth-century China missions and as a principal saint of the Vincentian family.
