Biography

Short Description

Jean-Louis Bonnard was a French Catholic priest and missionary of the Paris Foreign Missions Society (Société des Missions Étrangères de Paris) who died as a martyr in nineteenth-century Vietnam. He was born on 1 March 1824 at Saint-Christôt-en-Jarret, now the commune of Saint-Christo-en-Jarez, in the Loire department of east-central France. Formed for the priesthood in the decades after the Revolutionary and Napoleonic upheavals, he entered the Paris Foreign Missions Society, a society of apostolic life whose secular priests were sent to East and Southeast Asia. He was ordained priest in December 1848. In the mid-nineteenth century the Society was dispatching many young clergy to Siam, China, Korea, and the Vietnamese kingdoms; Bonnard received his appointment to Tonkin, the northern region of present-day Vietnam, then under the Nguyễn emperor Tự Đức.

He reached Tonkin in 1850 and took up pastoral work among existing Catholic communities and new converts in the apostolic vicariate. Vietnamese Christianity already had a long and often bloody history: repeated edicts since the seventeenth century had banned the religion, destroyed churches, and prescribed death or exile for missionaries and for Vietnamese who would not recant. Tự Đức’s reign, beginning in 1847, brought a new wave of such legislation. Foreign priests were treated as agents of European power as well as teachers of a forbidden cult. Bonnard nonetheless continued to celebrate the sacraments, instruct catechumens, and support Vietnamese priests and catechists, often moving in concealment among rural Christian villages.

In 1852 the authorities arrested him. He was imprisoned at Nam Định, interrogated, and condemned to death for illegally preaching Christianity. On 1 May 1852, at the age of twenty-eight, he was taken to the execution ground and beheaded. Letters written in captivity and later printed in missionary publications in France present a young priest who accepted death as the completion of his missionary vocation. After the execution, local Christians recovered his remains, a dangerous but frequent practice that preserved relics of the Vietnamese martyrs.

Bonnard was beatified by Pope Pius X on 2 May 1909 with other martyrs of Tonkin and Cochinchina, and was canonized by Pope John Paul II on 19 June 1988 among the one hundred and seventeen Martyrs of Vietnam. That group comprises Vietnamese clergy, catechists, and lay faithful together with Spanish Dominicans and French missionaries of the Paris Foreign Missions Society who were put to death between the seventeenth and nineteenth centuries. Their collective feast is kept on 24 November in the General Roman Calendar. Bonnard is remembered as one of the MEP priests who shared the fate of the Vietnamese Catholic community during the persecutions of the Nguyễn era, and as a representative figure of nineteenth-century French missionary Catholicism in East Asia.
