Biography

Short Description

Jeanne Mance was born in 1606 in Langres, in the Champagne region of France, the daughter of Charles Mance, a royal prosecutor, and Catherine Émonnot. She grew up in a large, devout Catholic family during the Catholic Reformation. Although she felt a strong religious calling, she did not enter a convent. Accounts of missionary work among Indigenous peoples in New France, circulated through the Jesuit Relations, together with the charitable example of figures such as Vincent de Paul, led her to dedicate her life to nursing the sick in the French colony.

In the early 1640s she joined the Société Notre-Dame de Montréal, a lay and clerical association that intended to found a settlement on the Island of Montreal in honour of the Virgin Mary. Financed in part by the wealthy widow Angélique Faure de Bullion, who wished to endow a hospital, Mance sailed from La Rochelle in 1641. After wintering at Quebec, she reached the site of Ville-Marie (present-day Montreal) in 1642 with Paul de Chomedey de Maisonneuve and a small group of colonists. She established the Hôtel-Dieu de Montréal, which began receiving patients in the mid-1640s and is regarded as the first hospital in Montreal. As its administrator and principal nurse she treated colonists and Indigenous patients, managed scarce resources, and repeatedly crossed the Atlantic to raise money, recruit staff, and represent the colony in France.

Mance remained a laywoman and never married or had children. In the late 1650s she arranged for the Religious Hospitallers of St. Joseph to come from France to take charge of nursing at the Hôtel-Dieu, while she continued to oversee the institution’s temporal affairs. During decades of conflict with the Iroquois, epidemic disease, and material hardship, she was a central figure in the survival of Ville-Marie, combining the roles of nurse, hospital foundress, and colonial intermediary. She died in Montreal in 1673 and was buried at the Hôtel-Dieu. The Catholic Church has not beatified or canonized her; she is remembered as a founder of Montreal and a pioneer of hospital care in Canada.
