Biography

Short Description

Jehoshaphat (also spelled Jehosaphat), son of King Asa and of Azubah daughter of Shilhi, was a king of Judah in the ninth century BCE. The books of Kings and Chronicles state that he was thirty-five years old when he began to reign in Jerusalem and that he reigned twenty-five years. Traditional reconstructions of Judahite royal chronology place that reign in the mid-ninth century BCE, overlapping the Omride dynasty in the northern kingdom of Israel. The Hebrew Bible presents him as a ruler who did what was right in the eyes of the Lord and walked in the ways of Asa and of David, though Kings and Chronicles differ in emphasis and in some details of cultic practice. No extra-biblical inscription names him, and no contemporary source records a birth year; knowledge of his life depends on the biblical historiographical books read against the archaeology and chronology of ninth-century Judah and Israel.

Chronicles describes a program of religious instruction and judicial reform. Jehoshaphat is said to have sent officials, Levites, and priests through the cities of Judah to teach the Book of the Law of the Lord. He appointed judges in the fortified cities and a central court in Jerusalem, charging them to judge for the Lord and to avoid partiality and bribery. He also strengthened the kingdom with fortresses and store cities, and the Chronicler reports tribute and military support from Philistines and Arabs. Treatment of the high places is inconsistent: Kings says they were not removed, while Chronicles claims he removed them, a tension typical of the two traditions. His mother’s name is given, but the biblical text does not preserve the name of a wife; it does record that he had several sons, including Jehoram, who succeeded him, and others to whom he gave gifts and fortified cities.

Jehoshaphat’s foreign policy was marked by close alliance with Israel. He made a marriage alliance with the house of Ahab—his son Jehoram married Athaliah, Ahab’s daughter—and joined Ahab in the campaign against Ramoth-Gilead, in which Ahab was killed. The prophet Jehu son of Hanani rebuked Jehoshaphat for helping the wicked, while also acknowledging that good was found in him because he had destroyed Asherahs and set his heart to seek God. A later commercial partnership with Ahaziah of Israel to build ships at Ezion-geber ended when the fleet was wrecked, an outcome Chronicles attributes to prophetic warning against the alliance.

The episode most closely associated with Jehoshaphat is the invasion of a coalition of Moabites, Ammonites, and people of Mount Seir, narrated only in 2 Chronicles 20. Jehoshaphat proclaimed a fast, assembled Judah at the temple, and prayed, appealing to the promise to Abraham and to the temple as a place of help. The prophet Jahaziel declared that the battle belonged to God. Judah went out singing praise; the coalition turned on itself and was destroyed. Plunder was collected for three days, and the site was named the Valley of Beracah (blessing). The story became a classic example in later Jewish and Christian reading of trust in divine deliverance rather than military strength.

Jehoshaphat died in Jerusalem and was buried with his ancestors in the City of David. He was succeeded by his firstborn, Jehoram. Biblical evaluation ranks him among the reforming kings of Judah, while treating his repeated cooperation with the Omrides as a serious failing. He is remembered in Jewish and Christian tradition as a righteous king of the house of David. He was not the object of later formal beatification or canonization, and he is not assigned a universal feast day or a documented list of patronages in the manner of post-biblical Christian saints.
