Biography

Short Description

Jerome Pecherskyi, whose name appears in Slavonic sources as Ieronym or Hieronymus and who is often styled Jerome the Recluse, is numbered among the venerable monastic saints of the Kyiv Pechersk Lavra. That monastery, established in the mid-eleventh century on the hills above the Dnipro at Kyiv, became the principal centre of East Slavic monasticism and a major shrine through the two underground complexes known as the Near Caves and the Far Caves. Jerome belongs to the group of fathers whose relics are preserved in the Far Caves, also called the Caves of Saint Theodosius. No medieval vita devoted to him has come down to us, and the printed paterika of the Lavra give him only the briefest notice. Later liturgical calendars sometimes place him in the thirteenth or fourteenth century, among the so-called later Pechersk fathers who lived after the Mongol sack of Kyiv in the thirteenth century, but this chronological assignment is traditional rather than demonstrable from contemporary records.

The title of recluse (zatvornik) attached to his name indicates that he followed the eremitical discipline long practiced at the Lavra. From the time of Saint Anthony, founder of the cave monastery, certain monks received a blessing to live in strict seclusion within a cave cell, occupying themselves with the Jesus Prayer, psalmody, modest manual work, and extreme fasting. The recluse ordinarily remained a member of the monastic brotherhood, subject to the abbot, and was supplied with food through a narrow aperture; only rarely did he converse with visitors or with a designated spiritual father. In the absence of a personal biography it is impossible to reconstruct Jerome’s particular ascetic regime, the length of his reclusion, or any miracles attributed to him in his lifetime. He is known solely through this vocational designation and through the later cult of his relics.

Those relics are shown in the Far Caves of the Kyiv Pechersk Lavra, where they have formed part of the monastery’s sacred topography for centuries. The Orthodox Church commemorates him on 28 August, the date of the Synaxis of the Venerable Fathers of the Kyiv Caves whose relics rest in the Far Caves; he is likewise included in the general Synaxis of all the Pechersk fathers. Some church calendars record an additional individual memorial, but the synaxis of 28 August is the observance that can be verified with confidence in the standard menologia. Local veneration of the cave-dwelling monks grew within the Lavra itself. It was given more stable liturgical form in the early modern period, especially in the seventeenth century, when the monastery printed paterika, service books, and engraved maps of the caves that listed the names of the saints buried there, Jerome among them.

The extreme poverty of the written evidence is itself characteristic of a large number of the Pechersk saints. After the devastation of Kyiv in the thirteenth century, and through the subsequent centuries of Lithuanian and Polish-Lithuanian rule, the Lavra continued to attract monks who sought the old cave way of life. Many of them left no literary monument. Their names were kept alive by the brotherhood, by inscriptions and boards in the caves, and by the conviction that their relics were a source of blessing. Jerome Pecherskyi therefore represents, more than a recoverable individual career, the endurance of Kyivan cave monasticism and the Church’s willingness to honor holiness even when almost every biographical detail has been lost. Modern historical research has not succeeded in adding securely documented facts to the traditional notice, and any account of him must remain correspondingly modest.
