Biography

Short Description

Jerónima de la Asunción was born Jerónima Yáñez de la Fuente in 1555 in Toledo, in the Crown of Castile. As a young woman in the later sixteenth century she entered the royal Poor Clare monastery of Santa Isabel in Toledo and took the religious name Jerónima de la Asunción. She professed the Rule of Saint Clare and remained in that enclosed community for roughly half a century. Contemporary and near-contemporary accounts describe her Spanish years as those of a strictly observant contemplative, marked by fasting, penance, and a reputation for holiness that later circulated in written lives of the foundress rather than by any public office outside the cloister.

In the early seventeenth century Spanish ecclesiastical and colonial authorities sought to plant a house of enclosed nuns in Manila, capital of the Spanish East Indies. After prolonged negotiation and with authorization from Rome, Jerónima, already in her sixties, was chosen to lead a founding party of Poor Clare sisters from Spain. In 1620 the group traveled to Seville and Cádiz to embark. While they waited in Seville, Diego Velázquez painted her in the habit of her order; those portraits, including the well-known canvas now in the Museo del Prado, are the principal visual records of her appearance and identify her by name and office. The nuns then crossed the Atlantic to New Spain and the Pacific on the Manila galleon route, a voyage of many months.

They reached Manila in 1621 and established the Monastery of Santa Clara, the first community of contemplative nuns in the Philippine Islands and in East Asia. Jerónima served as abbess of the new foundation. The house observed strict enclosure and the Poor Clare rule. Relations with local civil and church authorities were at times strained over jurisdiction, patronage, and the nuns’ independence. Witnesses in Manila described her as rigorous in penance and governance and as an object of popular devotion even during her lifetime.

Jerónima died in Manila in 1630 and was buried at the monastery she had founded in Intramuros. Testimonies of her life and reputation for sanctity were later collected, and a cause for beatification was opened; in the Catholic Church she is honored as a Servant of God but has not been beatified or canonized. The Manila Poor Clares continued after her death, though the original Intramuros monastery was subsequently destroyed and the community relocated. She is remembered as the foundress of female contemplative life in the Philippines and, through the Velázquez portraits, as a rare documented image of an early modern missionary nun.
