Biography

Jerónimo Hermosilla was a Spanish Dominican missionary bishop martyred in nineteenth-century Vietnam. He was born in 1800 in Santo Domingo de la Calzada, in La Rioja in northern Spain. He entered the Order of Preachers, was formed as a friar, and was ordained a priest in Spain in the 1820s. He was then sent to the Dominican missions of the Spanish East Indies. After a period in Manila he was assigned to Tonkin in northern Vietnam, where the Order of Preachers had maintained missions among local Catholic communities since the seventeenth century.

In Tonkin he served through decades of tension between the Nguyễn court and Christian missions. In the early 1840s he was appointed vicar apostolic of Eastern Tonkin and consecrated a bishop, taking charge of a vicariate that included European missionaries and a growing body of Vietnamese priests, catechists, and lay faithful. His episcopal ministry unfolded under Emperor Tự Đức, whose edicts banned Christianity, confiscated church property, and prescribed severe penalties for missionaries and converts. Hermosilla continued to govern the vicariate in secret, traveling in disguise, administering confirmation and holy orders, and supporting communities that faced imprisonment and death.

The persecution reached him in 1861. He was arrested together with the Dominican bishop Valentín Berriochoa and the Dominican priest Pedro Almató. After captivity they were executed by beheading on 1 November 1861 at Hải Dương. He was in his early sixties. Their deaths were public punishments intended to deter the practice of Christianity.

Devotion to Hermosilla formed part of the wider cult of the Vietnamese martyrs. He was beatified by Pope Leo XIII in 1900, in a group of Tonkinese martyrs. On 19 June 1988 Pope John Paul II canonized him in Rome with 116 other martyrs of Vietnam, a company of bishops, priests, religious, and lay people, Vietnamese and foreign, killed between the seventeenth and nineteenth centuries. The Catholic Church commemorates these martyrs collectively on 24 November.
