Biography

Short Description

Jesús María Echavarría y Aguirre was a Mexican Roman Catholic prelate of the late nineteenth and first half of the twentieth century, known principally as Bishop of Saltillo from 1905 until his death. He was born on 6 July 1858 in Bacubirito, in the state of Sinaloa in northwestern Mexico. He received his ecclesiastical formation in the seminary system of that region and was ordained to the priesthood on 18 October 1886. As a priest he was assigned to teaching and formation, serving as a professor and later as rector of the seminary in Culiacán, where he helped prepare candidates for the priesthood for the Church in Sinaloa.

Pope Pius X appointed him Bishop of Saltillo on 16 December 1904. He received episcopal consecration on 12 February 1905 and thereafter governed a diocese covering a large territory in the northern state of Coahuila. His episcopate of nearly five decades unfolded against the Mexican Revolution, the restrictions placed on the Church by the Constitution of 1917, and the Cristero conflict of the 1920s. In that setting he worked to keep seminaries, parishes, and catechetical instruction functioning as far as circumstances allowed, and to support clergy and laity under legal and political pressure.

In addition to diocesan administration, Echavarría y Aguirre founded a congregation of women religious dedicated to catechetical work, referred to in English-language sources as the Sisters of the Catechism. The foundation reflected his emphasis on religious education as a pastoral priority. He remained ordinary of Saltillo into old age and died in that city on 5 April 1954, at the age of ninety-five, after one of the longest episcopates of his era in Mexico.

A cause for his beatification has been undertaken in the Catholic Church, and some Catholic references style him a Servant of God. He has not been beatified or canonized, and no liturgical feast has been assigned to him as a saint. His memory is preserved chiefly in the Diocese of Saltillo and among the religious institute he established, as a bishop who combined long institutional leadership with a concern for catechesis during a difficult period of Mexican Church history.
