Biography

Short Description

Jænberht (also recorded as Jambert, Jaenbert, Janbert, and similar forms) was an eighth-century Anglo-Saxon churchman who served as Archbishop of Canterbury. Nothing reliable is known of his birth, parentage, or early life. He first appears in the historical record as a monk, and later abbot, of Saint Augustine's Abbey at Canterbury, the monastery founded in connection with the Gregorian mission to the English. In 765 he was chosen to succeed Bregowine as archbishop. He was consecrated on 2 February 765 and received the pallium from Rome the following year, confirming his metropolitan status over the southern English dioceses.

His archiepiscopate was dominated by the growing power of Offa, king of Mercia, who exercised overlordship in Kent. Relations between the archbishop and the Mercian king were strained, and Offa is reported to have taken estates belonging to the church of Canterbury. The conflict came to a head in the late 780s. At a synod held at Chelsea in 787, in the presence of papal legates, Offa obtained approval for raising the Mercian see of Lichfield to archiepiscopal rank. Hygeberht of Lichfield became a second southern metropolitan, and several dioceses were detached from Canterbury's province. The division was a serious reduction of Canterbury's jurisdiction, and Jænberht appears to have opposed it. He is also associated with some of the earliest surviving English archiepiscopal coinage, silver pennies struck in his name at Canterbury.

Jænberht remained in office after the creation of the Lichfield archbishopric. Later medieval writers alleged that he conspired with Charlemagne against Offa, but modern historians treat those stories as untrustworthy inventions of a much later date. He died on 12 August 792 and was buried at Saint Augustine's Abbey, the house he had formerly ruled. His successor Æthelhard eventually obtained from Pope Leo III the restoration of Canterbury's rights after Offa's death, and the Lichfield archbishopric was suppressed.

Jænberht was later commemorated as a saint, with a feast day on 12 August, the traditional date of his death. Evidence for an early, widespread cult is limited. He remains a relatively obscure figure, known chiefly from charters, the record of church councils, brief notices in the Anglo-Saxon Chronicle, and later Canterbury historians. His career illustrates the political pressure that Mercian hegemony placed on the Kentish church in the later eighth century.
