Biography

Short Description

Saint Joachim is a figure of Christian tradition venerated as the husband of Saint Anne and the father of the Virgin Mary, and thus as the maternal grandfather of Jesus. He does not appear in the canonical books of the New Testament. The principal ancient narrative about him is the Protoevangelium of James, an infancy gospel generally dated to the second century. Later retellings, including the Gospel of Pseudo-Matthew and medieval compilations such as the Golden Legend of Jacobus de Voragine, elaborated the same basic story and helped spread his cult in both East and West. No independent first-century source confirms his existence, and no reliable historical evidence supplies a birth year, death year, or verified place of birth or burial.

According to the Protoevangelium, Joachim was a wealthy and devout Israelite whose offerings at the Temple were publicly refused because he and his wife Anne had remained childless. Humiliated, he withdrew to the wilderness, where he fasted and prayed for forty days. An angel then appeared to him, and separately to Anne, to announce that they would have a child. Anne conceived and bore Mary, who was dedicated to the Temple. The narrative presents Joachim as a righteous man associated with Jerusalem and the Temple cult, but it gives no historically verifiable dates or a precise hometown. Later pious tradition sometimes located the couple in Nazareth or Jerusalem and assigned legendary ages; none of those details can be confirmed from independent historical sources.

Veneration of Joachim developed first in the Christian East. The Eastern Orthodox Church commemorates him, together with Anne, on 9 September, the day after the feast of the Nativity of Mary. In the medieval Latin West his cult grew more slowly. A feast of Saint Joachim was observed on various dates, including 20 March and, from the early twentieth century until the liturgical reform of 1969, 16 August. In the present General Roman Calendar he is celebrated jointly with Saint Anne on 26 July. He is commonly invoked as a patron of fathers, grandfathers, grandparents, and married couples, and in some lists of cabinetmakers. Because he belongs to the era of the New Testament’s silent years and is known only through apocryphal and liturgical tradition, no contemporary record of a formal canonization or beatification exists; his sainthood is that of ancient cultus rather than of a modern papal process.

Iconographically Joachim is often shown as an elderly man, sometimes meeting Anne at the Golden Gate of Jerusalem after the angelic annunciations, or presenting Mary in the Temple. Those scenes became standard in Byzantine and later Western art. Historians treat Joachim as a traditional rather than a documented biographical subject: the stories encode theological claims about Mary’s parentage and purity rather than a recoverable first-century life. What can be said with confidence is that from late antiquity onward Christian churches have honored him as Mary’s father and as a model of patient faith in the face of childlessness and public shame.
