Biography

Short Description

Joan of Aza (Spanish: Juana de Aza) was a noblewoman of Old Castile in the twelfth century, known to history primarily as the mother of Saint Dominic, founder of the Order of Preachers. She came from the family of the lords of Aza, whose fortress stood in the region of Burgos in what is now northern Spain. Surviving contemporary records of her life are extremely sparse; almost everything reported about her derives from thirteenth-century Dominican hagiography, especially the Libellus of Blessed Jordan of Saxony, and from later legendary accretions. Tradition holds that she was born at Aza in the mid-twelfth century. She married Felix de Guzmán (also called Félix Núñez de Guzmán), a Castilian noble connected with the town of Caleruega in the diocese of Osma, and the couple established their household there among the landed gentry of the district.

Jordan of Saxony and subsequent Dominican writers describe Joan and Felix as people of notable virtue who raised their children in a climate of prayer and Christian instruction. They had three sons who entered the clerical or religious state: Anthony, a priest; Mannes (also called Manés or Mames), who became a Dominican and is venerated as Blessed Mannes of Guzmán; and Dominic, born at Caleruega around 1170. Later medieval and early modern legends, which should be treated with caution as historical evidence, claim that Joan long remained childless and undertook a pilgrimage to the shrine of Santo Domingo de Silos, after which she conceived. Two symbolic dreams are repeatedly attached to her name: a vision of a dog carrying a torch that kindled the earth, afterwards interpreted as a prophecy of the Dominican Order, and the appearance of a star upon the forehead of the newborn Dominic. These motifs belong to the legendary vita of Saint Dominic rather than to independently attested events.

Joan was reputed for personal austerity, devotion, and generosity to the poor of the Caleruega district. After her husband's death she persevered in a life of widowhood marked by prayer and almsgiving. Traditional Catholic sources assign her death to 1205 at Caleruega, where she was buried. A popular cult developed around her memory and was fostered by the Dominican Order, which honored her as the mother of its founder. In 1828 Pope Leo XII confirmed this immemorial cult, an act recognized as equivalent to beatification. Her liturgical commemoration is kept on 2 August.

Because almost no charters or administrative documents concerning Joan herself have been identified, the historian must distinguish the modest kernel of twelfth-century Castilian family history from the rich overlay of Dominican legend. What can be said with reasonable confidence is that she was a pious noble matron of Caleruega whose sons Anthony, Mannes, and Dominic all embraced ecclesiastical careers, and that her memory was cherished in the Order of Preachers from the generation after Dominic's death. Her nineteenth-century beatification regularized a devotion that had already existed for centuries in Castile and in Dominican houses.
