Biography

Short Description

Joan of France, also known as Joan of Valois (Jeanne de France or Jeanne de Valois), was a French princess of the royal house of Valois, briefly queen consort of France, duchess of Berry in her own right, foundress of a contemplative order, and a canonized saint of the Catholic Church. She was born on 23 April 1464 at Nogent-le-Roi, the daughter of King Louis XI of France and Charlotte of Savoy, and sister of King Charles VIII and of Anne of France (Anne de Beaujeu). From childhood she suffered from physical disabilities, including a marked curvature of the spine and lameness, which left her small of stature and an object of court gossip. Her father treated these infirmities as a political instrument. In 1476 he forced a marriage between the twelve-year-old Joan and her cousin Louis, Duke of Orléans, then fourteen, intending that a union unlikely to produce heirs would neutralize the Orléans claim to the crown. The wedding was celebrated at Montrichard. Louis later insisted that he had consented only under threat and that the marriage was never consummated.

As Duchess of Orléans, Joan endured an openly unhappy marriage. When Louis joined the nobles’ rising known as the Mad War against the regency of Joan’s sister Anne, he was captured and imprisoned; Joan interceded for him and visited him, showing a loyalty he did not return. In 1498 Charles VIII died without a surviving son and Louis of Orléans succeeded as Louis XII. Determined to marry Anne of Brittany, widow of Charles VIII, and thereby keep Brittany attached to the French crown, the new king petitioned Pope Alexander VI for an annulment. A canonical tribunal heard allegations of force, fear, and Joan’s physical incapacity for marriage. Joan testified with notable dignity, maintaining that she had always regarded the marriage as valid yet submitting herself to the judgment of the Church. The union was declared null in December 1498. Louis XII compensated her with the duchy of Berry in sovereign title and substantial revenues, and she withdrew from court life.

Settled at Bourges, Joan governed her duchy with a reputation for justice and charity toward the poor. Guided by her Franciscan confessor Gilbert Nicolas (later venerated as Blessed Gabriel Maria), she founded in the first years of the sixteenth century a new enclosed order of nuns dedicated to imitating the ten evangelical virtues of the Virgin Mary as set out in the Gospels. The Order of the Annunciation of the Blessed Virgin Mary, commonly called the Annonciades, received papal approval, and a convent was established at Bourges. Joan took the religious habit and lived according to the rule she had helped to frame, combining the remaining duties of a reigning duchess with prayer, penance, and works of mercy. She died at Bourges on 4 February 1505 and was buried in the church of the convent she had founded.

A local cult developed in Berry and among the Annonciade nuns. Joan was beatified by Pope Benedict XIV in 1742 and canonized by Pope Pius XII on 28 May 1950. Her feast is kept on 4 February. Catholic tradition remembers her as a woman who bore ridicule, a coerced and humiliating marriage, and public repudiation without bitterness, and who devoted the last years of her life to a contemplative foundation and to the relief of the poor.
