Biography

Short Description

Joanna of Portugal, known in Portuguese as Infanta Joana and popularly as Santa Joana Princesa, was a royal princess of the House of Aviz. She was born in Lisbon in 1452, the daughter of King Afonso V of Portugal and Queen Isabella of Coimbra. Her mother died in 1455, when Joanna was still a small child, and she was raised at the Portuguese court. She had a younger brother, the future King John II. From an early age she was noted for piety, prayer, and charity, and she showed a lasting preference for religious life over the ceremonial and dynastic roles expected of a fifteenth-century Iberian infanta.

In 1471, during her father’s campaign in North Africa in which Portuguese forces took Asilah and Tangier, Joanna served as regent of the kingdom while still in her teens and was credited with governing prudently. As an unmarried princess close to the throne she remained a dynastic asset. Marriage alliances were proposed at various times, including matches connected with the French royal house and, later, with King Richard III of England. She refused these unions. She had long wished to enter religion, and papal permission for her to do so was obtained in the 1470s, but her father and afterward her brother the king were unwilling to let a princess so near the succession disappear into a cloister while her hand might still serve political ends.

Only in the mid-1480s was she able to withdraw to the Convent of Jesus in Aveiro, a house of Dominican nuns. There she lived in austerity, prayer, and service, though she did not make solemn monastic profession and remained technically a royal laywoman who could in theory have been recalled to court. She became known for humility and for patience in illness. She died at Aveiro in 1490 and was buried in the convent church. A local cult formed around her tomb; later generations reported that her body was found incorrupt and that favors were granted through her intercession.

Pope Innocent XII confirmed her cult and beatified her in 1693. She has not been formally canonized, but in Portugal she is widely called Santa Joana Princesa. Her feast is kept on 12 May, and she is the patron of the city of Aveiro. The former monastery, later secularized, is now a museum that preserves her tomb and objects associated with her memory. She remains a significant figure in late medieval Portuguese royal and religious history: a princess who sought the cloister against dynastic pressure and who became a regional focus of devotion in central Portugal.
