Biography

Short Description

Joan Wu Wenyin (also known in Latin as Ioannes Wu Wenyin and in English as John Wu Wenyin; Chinese 吴文音) was a Chinese Catholic lay catechist and martyr of the Boxer Rebellion. He is one of the 120 Martyr Saints of China. He was born in 1850 in Yongnian, in Hebei province (then Zhili) in northern China, in a region where Catholic communities had been planted by earlier missionary work and had taken on a strongly local, village-based character. Surviving notices identify him as a catechist rather than as a member of the clergy or of a religious institute: he instructed others in the faith in a setting where ordained priests were few and much of ordinary Christian life depended on lay teachers.

The Church in late Qing northern China existed under chronic legal and social pressure. Christianity was associated by many officials and villagers with foreign power after the Opium Wars and the unequal treaties, and Chinese Catholics were often accused of abandoning ancestral rites. Periodic local persecutions had already produced martyrs in the seventeenth, eighteenth, and nineteenth centuries. In 1900 these tensions erupted in the Boxer Rebellion. The Yihetuan (Boxers), with varying degrees of official connivance, attacked missionaries and Chinese Christians across Zhili, Shanxi, Shandong and neighbouring provinces. Believers were commonly offered the choice of apostasy—trampling a cross or formally renouncing the faith—or death.

Wu Wenyin was seized in the summer of 1900 during this campaign against Christian communities in Hebei. He refused to apostatize and was put to death on 8 July 1900, at about fifty years of age. Contemporary and later martyrological summaries give little further personal detail: they do not preserve a full account of his family circumstances, the exact place of execution, or the precise manner of death beyond the fact of martyrdom for refusing to deny the faith. He belongs to the large cohort of Chinese lay faithful, including many catechists, killed in Zhili in 1900 rather than to the better-documented groups of foreign bishops, priests and religious murdered in the same months.

He is counted among Augustine Zhao Rong and 119 companions, a group of 87 Chinese Catholics and 33 foreign missionaries who died for the faith in China between the mid-seventeenth century and 1930. Pope John Paul II canonized the entire group in Rome on 1 October 2000. Their collective optional memorial in the General Roman Calendar is 9 July. Individually Wu Wenyin remains an obscure figure; the historical record is thin and consists mainly of his name, lay office, place of origin, year of birth, and the date and circumstances of his death. He is venerated in the Catholic Church as a saint and martyr, without a separately documented cult of particular patronages.
