Biography

Short Description

Jofré de Blanes is a historical figure of apparently Catalan origin whose life remains poorly documented in the major historical and hagiographical compilations available to modern researchers. The given name Jofré represents a medieval Catalan form of the Germanic name Godfrey or Geoffrey, which was in use among the nobility and urban elites of the Crown of Aragon. The toponymic element “de Blanes” points to a connection with the town of Blanes, a coastal settlement in the comarca of La Selva in the present-day province of Girona, Catalonia. Beyond this onomastic evidence, precise biographical data such as dates of birth and death, family relationships, and career details have not been securely established in widely consulted reliable sources.

Medieval Catalonia, particularly during the thirteenth through fifteenth centuries, produced numerous local notables, clerics, and occasional candidates for popular veneration whose memory survived only in fragmentary archival notices, notarial records, or brief mentions in monastic chronicles. In the absence of a surviving vita, liturgical office, or consistent cult, it is not possible to confirm whether Jofré de Blanes was regarded as a saint or blessed in any diocese, nor whether he belonged to a religious order. No feast day, patronage, or act of canonization or beatification associated with this name appears in the standard Roman Martyrology or in the more specialized catalogues of Catalan saints.

The town of Blanes itself, situated on the Costa Brava, was in the later Middle Ages a modest but strategically placed community under the influence of viscounts and later under the Crown. Families taking their name from the place are attested in regional documentation, yet linking any particular individual named Jofré to a specific generation or office would require archival work that has not, to the present compiler’s knowledge, yielded a published, verifiable biography. Consequently, claims concerning marriage, children, or ecclesiastical rank cannot be advanced on the basis of currently accessible sources.

This scarcity of information is not unusual for secondary or tertiary figures of the period. Many individuals who played roles in local administration, in the military orders, or in the mendicant movements of Catalonia left only a name in a cartulary or a tomb inscription that has since been lost. Until further primary-source research is published and critically assessed, the biography of Jofré de Blanes must remain largely a blank, with only the linguistic and geographic clues of his name offering a cautious point of departure for future inquiry.
