Biography

Short Description

Johann Baptist Reus was a German Jesuit priest and missionary who spent most of his adult life in southern Brazil, where he became known among Catholics as a teacher, spiritual director, and alleged mystic. He was born in 1868 in Pottenstein, in Upper Franconia in the Kingdom of Bavaria. As a young man he entered the Society of Jesus and completed the order’s usual course of studies and formation before ordination to the priesthood. He was sent to the Jesuit mission in Rio Grande do Sul, a region with substantial German Catholic immigration, and was thereafter known in Portuguese as João Batista Reus. For decades he was associated with the Jesuit college and formation houses in São Leopoldo.

In São Leopoldo he taught theology and related subjects and served as a confessor and spiritual guide to students, seminarians, and members of the local faithful. He did not become a bishop or hold any other high ecclesiastical office; his influence was that of a missionary professor living under ordinary Jesuit community discipline. Contemporary and later accounts describe him as austere, devoted to the liturgy and to prolonged personal prayer, and closely bound to the routine of college and seminary life in a German-Brazilian Catholic setting.

From the early twentieth century, reports circulated that Reus experienced mystical phenomena, including visions, interior locutions, and the stigmata. He is said to have recorded much of his interior life in diaries and notes that later fed pious biographies. These claims made him a figure of local religious interest, but they remained a matter of private reputation rather than of a completed canonical investigation during his lifetime. Independent archival study of his early formation and of the precise chronology of the reported phenomena is limited in major European-language sources; much of what circulates comes from later hagiographical writing.

Reus died in São Leopoldo in 1947. As a Jesuit he lived under the vow of celibacy; there is no record of a spouse or of children. He has not been beatified or canonized, and the Catholic Church has not assigned him an official feast day or patronages. Local memory of him continued in parts of Rio Grande do Sul after his death, and some devotees have expressed interest in a possible cause of beatification, but he remains an uncanonized Jesuit missionary rather than a saint of the universal calendar.
