Biography

Short Description

The name Johanna is a Latin and vernacular feminine form of Johannes, itself from Hebrew Yochanan, “Yahweh is gracious.” It has been borne by innumerable Christian women from late antiquity through the modern period. This request supplies only that given name, with Wikidata identifier and Wikipedia URL both unknown. Under those constraints no unique historical person can be identified with the certainty required for a verified biographical record. Assigning dates, places, offices, or a cult would be speculation rather than history.

In Scripture and later hagiography the name appears in several unrelated traditions. The Gospel of Luke mentions Joanna (often rendered Johanna), wife of Chuza, steward of Herod Antipas, among the women who provided for Jesus and who went to the tomb. Medieval and early modern sources record noblewomen, abbesses, tertiaries, and locally venerated figures named Johanna or Joan; none can be shown to be the intended subject here. A separate literary tradition, first clearly attested in the thirteenth century, tells of a woman named Johanna who supposedly disguised herself as a man, studied, rose through clerical ranks, and was elected pope in the ninth century, only to be exposed when she gave birth during a Roman procession. Contemporary ninth-century papal catalogues and other records contain no such figure. Professional historians treat “Pope Joan” as legend, not as a recoverable life, so no birth year, death year, or other particulars from that story can be entered as verified fact.

Because reliable identification is impossible, every structured field that requires a source-based claim is left blank. No feast day, patronage, religious order, spouse, children, or ecclesiastical office can be assigned without inventing a person who has not been specified. Should a surname, place, century, or catalogue number be supplied, a proper historical or hagiographical notice could be attempted; with the information given, the biography cannot be written as if a single documented individual had been named.
