Biography

Short Description

Saints John and Paul were Christian martyrs of the fourth century whose joint cult is among the oldest in the city of Rome. In the traditional narrative contained in a Latin passio of uncertain date, they are presented as brothers who held military or court office in the household of Constantia, daughter of Constantine the Great. After her death they resided in a house on the Caelian Hill. When the emperor Julian (r. 361–363) sought to revive the public cult of the traditional gods, the two men refused to offer sacrifice. They were therefore executed in secret inside their own dwelling and buried on the spot. Later piety assigned the date 26 June and, commonly, the year 362 to their martyrdom.

Modern historical scholarship treats this story with considerable caution. The passio exhibits the literary features of a later hagiographical romance and appears designed to furnish an origin legend for a prominent Roman titulus. No contemporary chronicle or imperial record confirms the existence of two court officers of these names put to death by Julian. Archaeological work beneath the present Basilica of Santi Giovanni e Paolo on the Clivus Scauri has, however, uncovered a sequence of Roman insulae and a richly appointed fourth-century house that was subsequently marked by Christian graffiti, oratories, and what have been interpreted as martyr memorials. These finds demonstrate that a Christian cult site existed there from late antiquity, even if they cannot prove the biographical details of the legend.

The liturgical veneration of John and Paul is securely attested from an early period. Their names occur in the Martyrologium Hieronymianum and in Roman sacramentaries; a basilica dedicated to them already stood on the Caelian Hill by the fifth century and ranked among the original titular churches of Rome. In the ninth century Pope Paschal I is reported to have taken an interest in their relics. The church later passed to the Passionist congregation, which still serves it. A separate and celebrated Gothic church of Santi Giovanni e Paolo (San Zanipolo) in Venice, the burial place of many doges, likewise honors the same pair of martyrs. Their feast on 26 June was long observed throughout the Roman Rite; after the calendar reform of 1969 it ceased to be a universal obligatory memorial but continues to be kept in Rome and in particular calendars.

Beyond the fact of an ancient Roman martyr cult attached to two men named John and Paul, almost nothing about their personal lives can be verified. Dates and places of birth, family background, marital status, and the precise circumstances and year of death remain unknown. They are remembered in the tradition of the Church as lay martyrs who suffered in Rome for their refusal to participate in pagan worship, and their memoria on the Caelian Hill has been a continuous focus of Christian devotion from late antiquity to the present.
