Biography

Short Description

John Baptist Cỏn (Vietnamese: Gioan Baotixita Cỏn) was a nineteenth-century Catholic martyr of Vietnam and is venerated as one of the one hundred and seventeen Martyrs of Vietnam. These men and women, both native Vietnamese and foreign missionaries, were put to death for their Christian faith during successive waves of persecution under the Nguyễn dynasty. Specific biographical particulars concerning John Baptist Cỏn—such as the exact year and place of his birth, his occupation, and whether he was a layman, catechist, or member of the clergy—are not firmly established in the widely available historical literature in European languages. This scarcity of personal detail is typical for many of the Vietnamese lay and lesser-known clerical martyrs, whose lives were documented chiefly in the acts of their martyrdom compiled for beatification processes rather than in independent, detailed vitae.

Catholicism first took lasting root in Vietnam in the seventeenth century through Jesuit missionaries such as Alexandre de Rhodes, who developed a romanized script for Vietnamese and organized local catechists. In the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries the Paris Foreign Missions Society and Spanish Dominican friars continued the work, forming dioceses in Tonkin, Annam, and Cochinchina. By the reign of Emperor Minh Mạng (1820–1841) the imperial court viewed Christianity as a threat to Confucian social order and to sovereignty, associating it with European colonial ambitions. Minh Mạng and later emperors issued edicts that forbade the faith, ordered the destruction of churches and religious objects, and required suspected Christians to recant by stepping on a crucifix. Refusal brought confiscation, imprisonment in cages, torture, and death. John Baptist Cỏn lived in this environment of legal prohibition and social pressure in the territory of present-day Vietnam.

The one hundred and seventeen martyrs later raised to the altars represent a carefully documented selection from a much larger number of victims. They include eight Spanish bishops and priests, several French missionaries, Vietnamese bishops and priests, and a majority of Vietnamese lay faithful—catechists, soldiers, farmers, and parents. Executions were carried out by beheading with a sword, strangulation, burning, or slow death in prison. Local Christian communities often recovered the remains, preserving them as relics. Although the precise circumstances, date, and place of John Baptist Cỏn’s arrest and death are not given in the standard English-language notices of the group, he is commemorated as one who remained steadfast and shed his blood rather than deny Christ.

The Holy See examined the causes of these martyrs over many decades. Pope Leo XIII beatified a large group in 1900; Pope Pius X beatified further groups in 1906 and 1909; Pope Pius XII beatified another group in 1951. On 19 June 1988, during a solemn ceremony in Saint Peter’s Square, Pope John Paul II canonized all one hundred and seventeen together, holding them up as examples of heroic fidelity for the whole Church. Their collective feast day is celebrated on 24 November. Through this canonization John Baptist Cỏn is honored as a saint and shares in the patronage that the Martyrs of Vietnam exercise for the Catholic people of Vietnam, whose Church has continued to witness amid later political and social trials.
