Biography

Short Description

Jean de Montmirail, also known as John of Montmirail, was a French nobleman of Champagne who became a Cistercian monk and is venerated as blessed in the Catholic Church. He was born in 1165 at Montmirail in Champagne, the son of André de Montmirail, lord of Montmirail and of La Ferté-Gaucher, and of Hildiarde d'Oisy, through whom the family was connected with the lordship of Oisy. Raised in the high aristocracy of northern France, he was sent to the royal court and became a companion and favorite of King Philip II Augustus. As a young knight he was known for prowess in arms and in the tournament, and he took part in the military and political life of the Capetian monarchy.

While still in secular life he married Helvide de Dampierre. The marriage produced several children, including an heir who succeeded to his lordships; among the offspring associated with the house was Marie de Montmirail. Even as a married magnate he was already noted for personal austerity and for unusually generous charity. Accounts of his life describe him seeking out the poor and the sick, serving them at table, washing their feet, and showing particular care for lepers. This combination of courtly rank with penitential practice and almsgiving is a consistent feature of the tradition about him.

In the early thirteenth century, after making provision for his wife and children and settling his estates, he obtained leave to abandon secular rank and entered the Cistercian abbey of Notre-Dame de Longpont in the diocese of Soissons, in Picardy. He refused privileges that might have attached to his former status and insisted on sharing the ordinary and menial work of the community, including kitchen service and labor in the fields. Later writers emphasize his humility, obedience, and spirit of prayer, and they record that superiors sometimes tested his vocation with harshness, which he accepted.

Jean de Montmirail died at Longpont on 29 September 1217 and was buried in the abbey. His tomb became a local place of pilgrimage, and miracles were reported there. A cult grew in the region and within the Cistercian Order. In 1891 Pope Leo XIII confirmed this ancient cult, thereby ranking him among the blessed. His feast is kept on 29 September. He is remembered as a medieval lord who left court and arms for Cistercian poverty, without any well-documented official patronages attached to his name.
