Biography

John Finch was an English yeoman farmer and Roman Catholic martyr of the Elizabethan persecution. He was born in the mid-sixteenth century at Eccleston in Lancashire, a northern English county that retained a notably strong recusant population after the Reformation. Raised in the established Protestant church of the Elizabethan settlement, he conformed in his youth. After his marriage he converted to Catholicism and thereafter lived as a committed recusant at a time when reconciliation to Rome, attendance at Catholic worship, and assistance to priests were treated as capital offences under English penal statutes.

Following his conversion Finch placed his household and his knowledge of the Lancashire countryside at the service of the underground Catholic mission. His farm became a place of hospitality for seminary priests trained on the Continent who had returned to England in secret. He frequently acted as their guide, conducting them from one Catholic household to another so that they could celebrate Mass and administer the sacraments. Harbouring and guiding priests in this way exposed him to constant danger of arrest and execution.

Finch was eventually apprehended and imprisoned, first at Manchester and later in Lancaster Castle, where he endured harsh confinement. Brought to trial at Lancaster, he was condemned for having been reconciled to the Catholic Church and for sheltering priests. Offers of pardon conditioned on attendance at Protestant services were refused. On 20 April 1584 he was hanged, drawn and quartered at Lancaster, dying on the same day as the priest James Bell.

Pope Pius XI beatified him on 15 December 1929 among a large group of English and Welsh martyrs of the Reformation period. He is venerated as Blessed John Finch and is commemorated liturgically on 20 April. He remains one of the lesser-known lay martyrs of sixteenth-century England, remembered especially in Lancashire as a married farmer who supported the clandestine Catholic mission and died rather than conform.
