Biography

Short Description

John Gualbert, known in Italian as Giovanni Gualberto, was a Florentine nobleman of the late tenth and eleventh centuries who became a Benedictine reformer and the founder of the Vallumbrosan Order. He was born in Florence to a prominent family; traditional accounts place his birth in the later tenth century, but no precisely verified year survives. As a young man he was formed in the military and chivalric culture of his class. According to the earliest lives, a brother of his was murdered, and John resolved to avenge the killing. On a Good Friday he encountered the murderer in a narrow way near Florence. The man, unable to flee, threw himself on the ground with his arms extended in the form of a cross and begged for mercy in the name of Christ crucified that day. John sheathed his sword and granted pardon. Entering the nearby church of San Miniato al Monte to pray, he is said to have seen the figure of Christ on the crucifix bow its head in sign of approval. This episode, whether read as miracle or as later hagiographical shaping of a genuine conversion, became the defining image of his sanctity: the victory of evangelical forgiveness over the vendetta.

Soon afterward he sought admission among the Benedictine monks of San Miniato, received the habit, and lived there for some years. Conflict arose when the abbacy was obtained by simony, which he regarded as a grave corruption of the Church. Unwilling to remain under a simoniacal superior, he left San Miniato. After a period of searching that included contact with the eremitical life associated with Camaldoli and Saint Romuald, he settled with a few companions in the densely wooded valley of Vallombrosa (Vallis Umbrosa) in the Apennines east of Florence, around the fourth decade of the eleventh century. There he established a community that combined the Rule of Saint Benedict with marked austerity, strict enclosure, prolonged silence, and a clear distinction between choir monks devoted to the liturgical office and lay brothers who performed the heavy labor of forest and field. Vallombrosa became the mother house of a congregation that spread through Tuscany and beyond.

His reform was not only monastic but also public. He and his monks were among the most determined opponents of simony and clerical incontinence in eleventh-century Tuscany and aligned themselves with the papal reform later associated with Gregory VII. They clashed with the episcopal establishment in Florence. The most famous incident of this struggle was the ordeal of fire undergone in 1068 by the Vallumbrosan monk Peter, afterward known as Peter Igneus, who walked through flames to sustain the charge of simony against Bishop Pietro Mezzabarba of Florence; the bishop was subsequently deposed. John himself, though not a bishop, exercised wide moral authority as abbot and founder. He declined higher ecclesiastical office and remained a monk. Houses of his congregation were founded or reformed at several sites, including the ancient abbey of San Michele a Passignano in the Val di Pesa.

He died on 12 July 1073 at the abbey of Passignano, where he was buried. Devotion to him grew within the Vallumbrosan family and in Florence. Pope Celestine III canonized him in 1193. His feast is kept on 12 July. Because Vallombrosa stood in a great forest and because his monks were associated with the care of woodlands, he came to be invoked as a patron of foresters, parks, and park rangers. The Vallumbrosan Order continued as a Benedictine congregation, and the abbey of Vallombrosa remains the principal monument to the reform he inaugurated. His memory is bound both to the dramatic scene of pardon on the road and to the quieter work of building a strict, labor-sharing monastic life in opposition to the traffic in sacred offices that marked his age.
