Biography

Short Description

John Hambley was an English Roman Catholic priest executed for his faith in 1587, during the later years of the Elizabethan campaign against seminary clergy. He was born at St Mabyn, a parish near Bodmin in Cornwall. Almost nothing is known of his family, his date of birth, or his upbringing, beyond the fact that he was raised in the established Church of England. As a young man he converted to Roman Catholicism. In the England of Elizabeth I such a conversion was not a private matter of conscience only: reconciliation with the see of Rome could be construed as withdrawal of allegiance from the queen, and it exposed the convert to the penal laws against recusants.

After becoming a Catholic, Hambley left England for the Continent and entered the English College at Rheims, the seminary founded to train priests for the English mission while Catholic ordination and public ministry were forbidden at home. He was ordained to the priesthood in 1584. In 1585 he was sent back to England. That same year Parliament had passed the Act against Jesuits and Seminary Priests, which made it high treason for any priest ordained abroad since 1559 to enter or remain in the realm. Hambley’s work therefore consisted of secret Masses, the sacraments, and pastoral care among recusant families, carried on at constant risk of discovery.

He was arrested in 1586. Under examination, and facing torture and a traitor’s death, he recanted his Catholic faith and was released. Catholic accounts agree that he later withdrew the recantation, returned to the exercise of his priesthood, and was arrested again. Condemned for treason as a seminary priest, he was hanged, drawn, and quartered in 1587. The prevailing tradition among Catholic historians and the notice associated with his modern cult place the execution at Salisbury in Wiltshire. Because he had once given way under pressure, contemporary Protestant writers could depict him as an apostate of weak character; Catholic memory instead stressed that he recovered his resolve and died in communion with the Church.

Hambley remained little known among the larger number of priests put to death in the 1580s, and no burial place or independent medieval-style cult is recorded. In the twentieth century his name was included among the martyrs of England and Wales whose cause was examined in Rome. Pope John Paul II beatified him, together with eighty-four others, on 22 November 1987. He has not been canonized. In the proper calendar for England and Wales the Eighty-five Martyrs of England and Wales are kept on 4 May. No distinctive patronages are attached to him in the official lists.
